That's where our breeding plans diverge.  I personally see no reason to deal with 'show quality' birds if I'm planning to use a Saipan or other Oriental type bird for a cross.  You both know essentially what I have and they are far more than adequate for my purposes.  No, they don't have the finer points of SOP birds but neither are they so squat and ungainly that they can't even oil their own feathers and they have a bit more leg than the show stock, in fact, some of them have quite a bit more.

Along with the leg, they do have plenty of breast and other qualities in sufficient abundance to produce excellent meat birds on their own or turn out glorious capons.  But...that's why they make different kinds of ice cream...I eat only Breyers  but others must have Haagen Daz or perhaps Ben and Jerry's.

Edit for spelling...I just got home from a 14 hour shift at work and a 1.25 hour drive home.  :th

Well, I work only 3 or 4 days a week (usually) but I also into the meat part of finishing up the last major segment of my education. That's the really hard part, at least requires more intense, headache producing stress. But I'll soon be through it and I'll take a long vacation.

Its true that show quality have many flaws and that they are not meant to be be able to survive on their own any more than a toy poodle or english bulldog but I like how they look. Once I cross them though those flaws disappear with the addition of new blood and genes. The saipan I want to cross with a broiler and mostly just to see what happens.

maran over slow broiler. Ugly.... and shows the oriental game in the maran makeup. Not a heavy bird. But that ostrich can RUN

How many of these cross chicks did you hatch? I crossed a Buckeye to Cornish, most turned out exactly as expected, very nice, midway in body type between the two breeds but much faster growing. But one cockerel was a weird throwback or something- very tall, very long legs, emu- like, you'd never guess his breeding if you saw him. He's a lightweight fellow that still hasn't put on muscle at 15 weeks. Definitely a cull, but I wondered if he'd end up like a jersey giant or something, just take forever to get there- so I kept him- but I doubt he will ever be worth anything.

@ Sambat, the saipan crosses Ive made put on size and feather quickly.
400
saipan over barred rock

I can't remember how many I hatched. I only kept two out of the marans. They are still putting on height.I think they will put on weight but it looks like it will be a verry slow process
