Cornish Thread

Lacymorgan, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If your birds please you, that's good enough.

You are welcome on my thread...no one judges because we discourage browbeating people if they aren't interested in the SOP.

Ty appreciate it. I don't criticize someone's birds. It is like calling someone's baby ugly. Each person will love or like their birds for different reasons. A chicken to most on here is a pet or a project but well cared for just the same. You are very kind.

Naturally? Yeah. The second one would be better to try for natural breeding. You also gotta consider mobility, don't forget that! Good luck :D
They are both fine looking birds. You might if you have room get both and see what kind of chicks you get. It may surprise you and you will be set with your first hatch. Or, you might need to develop a generation or two. It really depends on what you in the end are hoping for. My neighbor dresses his out at 4 to 6 weeks using the breed I have because he likes smaller birds for just him and his wife. He said they can and will get more like the supermarket size but it is too much for them. I am going to give it a go and see what I get. At that time can decide if changes need to be made. Good luck to you in what ever choice you make. Remember nothing is etched in stone you can change it later.

I have some Cornish crosses that I got more than two weeks ago and they still are nearly as tiny as they were the day I brought them home. How big should they be by this time?

Here is 3 of our 250 CornishX cross last year with their "mom" a full grown Black Australorp hen AT 2-4 weeks... I would say at least that big or bigger. What r u feeding them??

Chick feed with a few treats like meal worms when I'm out there. Food is out 24/7 still right now. They are active when I let them out of their coop. I enjoy sitting out with them but with this my first batch, I was just wondering when they'd start actually getting big.

For the silent followers-- I'm ready to start shipping eggs. I have a list, but always looking to add to it. For more info- PM.

Quote: So, why are they so much bigger than their WC hatchmates? And why would it be interesting to cross buff with dark then back to buff?

Cornish are extremely slow growing/ maturing birds, and looking back- the extra shot of growth early on doesn't surprise me that the 2 CX/ Cornish chicks outgrew their purebred counterparts out of the gate. Eventually- everyone evened out and is the same size, and similar build as of about 7 or 8 months of age.

It's my understanding that the buffs are really hard to find, and even harder to find good ones. For enough money- a person can find really good Darks. I would use a one time shot of Dark in the buffs to improve on type, and then keep back crossing to 'try' and get back to an acceptable buff SOP color.
