Cornish x: Batch two

Just got my second batch in the mail this morning. 26 birds from Freedom Ranger hatchery all alive and well. They seem happy and are acclimating. Plan to record their progress here!

I am using a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat for this batch because my brooder plates are in use. 20% starter/grower and Mcmurray's broiler booster in the water. And away we go!

They are so cute when they are chicks! Are you using a temp sensor for your thermostat? Something with a long cord to be at chick level under the heater? I have that same creamic heater, but just adjust the height like I would with a light bulb.

Yes there is a sensor under the CHE right at litter level that connects to the thermostat. My brooder ceiling is pretty low so not much room to raise the heater up. Plus with them being outside and it gettting chilly I didn't want them to have to deal with the swings, so opted for the thermostat. Such adorable little nuggets!!

This is a good time of year still warm for chicks and cooling off as they get bigger. I got some ducks last week for that reason. I can keep a male duck and have nice duck meat from the rest. I think they feather out faster with some temp swing, but the weakest might not do well. I lost one from the batch, they had a difficult ride with theP.O. & 5 were DOA.

I think they feather out faster just from the colder ambient temps. My nights are getting down to 50 so a 90 degree hot spot during a 70 degree day would be 70 degreesnduring a 50 degree night. I think that is pushing it for 3 day olds. There are myriad benefits I think to raising them outside though. I am looking forward to NOT worrying about heat stroke in a few weeks lol. I love fall in the northeast!

I have a batch of Ixworth x Bresse cross and want to compare to the CornishX. I would be interested weigh at 4 weeks and 8 weeks.

So far everyone is happy and healthy. I can't stop hanging out with these cuties. This is the first batch of chicks I ever brooded without a brooder plate. It is fun to be able to see everyone when they are sleepy and cuddling. Also, playing with camera angles is fun!! Just had a photoshoot: 5 days old

Well Said, Late August Early September is the best time to get meat birds. The worst time is March through June (depending on location) when foolish ol me tends to get them.
