Cornish

All this talk about lacing and what people are up to is great. keep it up.
I just wanted to know more about the breed.
I also love pics. keep hem coming.

So I don't mean to hijack the post, but you guys seems like some serious Cornish gurus, so I thought I'd ask. I'm working on drawing a Cornish right now, and I want it to be as accurate as possible. This is just a sketch, so things can be easily fixed. Sorry that it's so blurry... darn camera. I'm not sure what I color I want to make her, but I'm thinking White Laced Red or Jubilee, what do think? Thanks for your opinions, and sorry if I steal he thread!

I would say that the head needs to be more cruel looking, maybe a little less tail, and I would add a little length to the leg. Their necks are acutally pretty long, amazingly long when they want something.

I always come back to this image for the Standard Cornish:

I will admit to liking them a little bigger and wider (esp through the shoulder), but I think this captures their presence. The standard calls for a heavier brow, but I like just about everything else.

You are a very good artist! I wish I could capture my vision on paper like that!

Have been reading this thread and it's been great, our Daughter is just getting into the Bantam of this breed.

We really have fallen in love with this breed, they are so friendly and easy to work with. A little harder to hold for small hands they are soooo meaty

Not that we would ever eat them that would never be allowed here that's for sure....

Here are a couple of pictures of her Bantams...

This is her favorite girl, she is soooo sweet and comes to her everytime the cage is open and will sit in her lap for hours watching TV. Yes, most of them are welcome to visit, now a goose I may say something, but she'd still try it

I think the image you have in mind of the "perfect" Cornish is more of the British standard for Indian Games, Ryu. Some would say that since the Cornish/Indian Game is an English breed, we should follow their standard, anyway.

I was just looking at an image I have of a 1914 Dark Cornish and I think it matches your breeding goal fairly well, too. An interesting tidbit is that in the 1915 APA Standard, the eye color for Dark Cornish says: "Yellow, approaching pearl."

Looking at the 1929 portrait, the standard type had changed to a shorter-legged, stockier, less-wattled, shorter-beaked, pearl-eyed bird closer to what we see today. Your current exhibition birds are much more squat than this, however.

So I think your goal is rather traditionalistic, actually, which is kinda neat. Your breeding strategy makes perfect sense and I hope you'll keep us posted on your progress. You sound like you're on your way to developing a distinctive strain of your own which leads to diversity within the breed---a very good thing in my book.

The only thing I might suggest is that you find another exhibition-type line which is correct on the issues your current line needs help on and do some experimental crosses with them, too. Crossing lines can really screw up your lacing, but it might be worth a try. It'll certainly net you some hybrid vigor.

After saying how rare Dark Cornish were, I was finally getting around to reading my Poultry Press and there are a slew of DC champions in May's issue. So there's more really good stock out there than I thought...

Cheers and good luck!

I am in the process of getting the 1914 standard.

I totally agree about finding another Exhibition line to cross with. I was hoping to find two more, but I do need at least one more.

I saw some pics of exhibition Indian Game in Practical Poultry recently, I really did like the look of them. My ideal bird is very close to that. I really liked the legs and head on those birds.

There were some really lovely birds in Poultry Press. I opened up to their National breed show results and was staring at photos for a couple hours!

I will definately keep everyone posted. I've got a few youngsters with almost all their juvie feathering in. I've been trying to not look at them for the past month, but I'll be banding and sorting soon.

I sure am glad I found this thread now that I have made the move and got some of these birds. RYU I will try to get a few pic's of my new Standard Whites, they are still in quarintine, and I will work and do some prevenitive med treating today. I am seriously thinking of reducing my layer flock and some other projects and just sticking with these guy's, there are from what I have been told at least 2-3 show prospects in this bunch. I am really excited about this more than I ever had been.

Just want to get opinions on this Dark Cornish bantam pair. They were given to me recently, and I really don't know much about this breed. I couldn't get the roo to face me for a picture of his chest. Just wondering if they're a decent pair or not. I think they're really cool, but know nothing about them.

Thanks,

Paula
