CORONA CALIFORNIA - seeking other chicken crusaders!

Hi all Corona residents- check out this article in the Press Enterprise (thanks Valeria for sending it!) - not sure if this is good or bad news... sounds like it's not "legal" but animal control doesn't seem to enforce (unless they get a complaint I'm sure).

one thing of note is that even if they changed the ordinance, it would still limit chicken keeping to lots greater than 10,000 square feet, with the coop required to be 50 feet from a residence - this is so restrictive that most residents would still not be able to "legally" keep them.

I also live in Corona, and I have been working on my backyard homestead for 2 years now. Using chickens for fertilizer and eggs has always been a part of my plan and I am AMAZED that Corona prohibits keeping 4-5 in residential areas considering the history of the area.

The counsel tabled the ordinance because it appears they feel they just will not enforce it. I don't believe that is acceptable considering that gives them the right to arbitrarily remove your chickens and investment in coops, etc. whenever they feel like it.

I would be happy to get a group together to discuss this further and start taking the lead in getting this done. I don't think the proposed ordinance was really workable anyway with the lot and setback restrictions.

I think a more reasonable ordinance would be 4-5 females, no roosters, 6000sq ft lot minimum, with a 30ft setback from neighbors. If we begin organizing and setting appointments with the individual counsel-persons this should be a no-brainer. If we can get animal control on board with $5 licensing per bird, even better.

If anyone is interested in joining the group, let me know here and we can get together.

Hi there - Thanks Anniefannie and kamakiriad for taking this up. I'm definitley still interested - just got somewhat lax after that article came out. My husband and I met with the mayor a few months back, but when I read they weren't enforcing, my husband and I just decided to go for it and got 2 chickens - our neighbors were fine with it so we figured it wouldnt' be a problem. But I agree I am still a bit uncomfortable knowing the City could take them away.

However, I think that an ordinance should not restrict lot size and setback from neighbors. 6000 sq. ft. and 30 ft. from neighbors would still make keeping chickens illegal for most Corona residents. I would not be able to meet a 30 foot setback restriction on my property. I came across a posting from someone in Rancho Cucamonga where they enlisted such setback restrictions and she was forced to get rid of her flock b/c her property wasn't big enough. I know there are a lot of people in Corona who already have chickens, and bringing such an ordinance to fruition may mean they have to get rid of their flocks. It seems that for them, no enforcement would have been a better option.

I think what might work for more residents is a restriction of # of birds per lot size. Perhaps smaller lots could keep 2-3, while bigger lots could keep up to 6. Something along those lines. Perhaps a "permission slip" from the closest neighbor to the coop... I think the license fee is also a great idea.

Anyway - just my thoughts. Please keep me posted on any meetings - I'd be happy to attend and get more involved again.

Thanks!

HI there, well I do not live in Corona but in lake Elsinore. I had two chickens Hens and they were well taken care of I only had them for a week when my neighbor called animal control. They told me to I had a week to get rid of them so I did. I did some research called up the local animal control and asked to send the the city code that states no chickens are allowed. I was then transferred to a supervisor were she stated that I was allowed two max. but no rooster due to the noise. SO long story short I have the city code in my hand and I now have other girls. I recently had animal control come back to me on this same topic with the same neighbor calling in. Its funny that the animal control doesn't even know there own codes they are supposed to inforce. It makes me so mad to see I am allowed 5 dogs but only two hens that eat bugs, ley eggs and chill out with me on sunny days. Im thinking of making a petition about allowing more chickens to be allowed. Its terrible. Im get so dam mad cause this is infringing on my rights as an American citizen. I would get a petition going get every one you know to sign it then go to your city council and fight for your right as an American to have your girls

I thought I saw a few years ago that I could have chickens but found out today that I can't. I'd be happy to help and/or sign.... I only want two chickens for eggs for my family, it's not like I'm opening a poultry farm. My neighbors dogs make more noise and have more crap smell than two penned chickens would make. Lets organize. I live on River Rd near Stator Bro's.... Scott

I too live in Corona, the south part. I believe having live stock has to do with the city zoning, not jus the city or the area. It will be tough to change the existing laws. there are certain pockets of corona, especially the south, that too if you have a larger property. Usually the one which are zones for equestarian, you can have chickens or goats.
