My sister is lactose intolerant, she grew up with goats milk. Many alternatives today.
We have five kids, youngest, only boy was born allergic to milk, not lactose intolerant, dairy destroyed his innards kinda like those allergic to gluten. Gastrointestinal specialist said even if we breastfed him if DW had any dairy, soy or hazelnut (all related to his allergy they said) he would have been allergic to her breast milk. So no dairy or soy formula, put him on a expensive formula, no good either cause it still had some broke down dairy that some babies are ok with, so new super expensive formula, $50 for a small can... Said our insurance should cover it, didn't and we have great insurance.. . First time we have ever used WIC. Luckily he outgrew it by four yrs or so.
When we found out it all looked in our cupboards, you would be shocked on how many labels contained soy. I know you can make a lot yourself but check your cupboard out on what contains soy, its about everything.

And FYI, people are not allergic to gluten, it's a different set of systemic reactions in allergies, but yes, some allergies are quite severe and damaging. My kiddo used to also need a super expensive special supplement and thank goodness for WIC. Because of a long list of allergies kiddo could not have any of the typical WIC food items, but they coved the supplement. It was a God send.
