In hindsight, perhaps those of you so consumed with worry over the economy should have diversified your portfolios better. My retirement isn’t wrapped around the economy so much, so small as it is, it works for me.
What portfolios?:lau The people who will bear the brunt of an economic slump don't have portfolios. A lot don't even have food.

It seems apparent from a number of comments that the devastating effects of economic damage are largely felt by the poorest and weakest in society isn't understood.

The knee jerk, save every life at whatever cost when a crisis like this arises is the reaction of the comfortably off and seems to quickly disapear over matters of ideology and the resulting wars when it seems we cant throw lives away quickly enough.

Most people who don't spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter or supplement with vitamins are probably deficient in vitamin D, which helps the immune system from overreacting and filling the lungs with fluid (pneumonia) during infections. Do hospitals include vitamin D supplementation as part of their treatments? Probably not. Their mindset is that illness is the result of an absence of pharmaceuticals rather than an absence of needed nutrients. The article below reveals how patients treated outside during the 1918 flu epidemic did better than those kept inside, partly because they got vitamin D from sunlight. I read recently that virtually all patients in China have a potassium deficiency, and those treated with a potassium supplement did noticeably better.

The article mentions that pathogens don't survive as well outdoors due to what they called the Open Air factor, which they couldn't identify. It is probably ozone that is lethal to viruses and bacteria. I wonder if hospitals use ozone generators to purify their air?

Pubs were packed all over Ireland last night. So disrespectful to all of the people trying to contain this virus.
I am glad that the trees are getting their foliage because toilet paper is getting mighty scarce in Southside VA. My Catalpa tree leaves should work well. As for what you have witnessed in Ireland, people long for normalcy in their daily lives. And many folks simply don't think it can happen to them or their loved ones.

No, it's not. See my post above. These people are doing their literal jobs.

Or, perhaps, you would rather international health organizations NOT be running pandemic preparedness simulations? Cause that's the alternative.

Like what's the proposal here? Bill Gates made the Coronavirus? The CDC does pandemic simulations and updates their pandemic plan every year too. Did the CDC make the virus too?
Well, did it help in the least? No. While you may not find it frightening, others will and do. It is what it is.

And disrespectful to themselves (albeit, ignorantly or carelessly so) because alcohol weakens the immune system, especially in the lungs. I read one study that found alcohol abusers had 80-90% less of the antioxidant in their lungs that protects against airborne pathogens and oxidative agents.

I have read, and heard from people who have worked there, that heavy alcohol use is part of the culture in Wuhan, China, where the epidemic started. Add to that that most Chinese in China are vitamin D deficient, and possibly vitamin C deficient due to having a type of haptoglobin in their blood that causes vitamin C to degrade, and that 50-70% of Chinese are smokers (3-5 times greater than the US). A recent study found that smokers are twice as likely to have the ACE2 expression in their lungs, which is what coronavirus attaches to to infect lung cells.

So this really is a question we need to be asking about the people who are suffering most from this disease: What were their lifestyles like before getting sick? Were they smokers, drinkers? Makes a big difference.

Washing youre hands with liquid soap or an old fashioned bar of soap for 20 seconds works too to desinfect.

Best thing you can do to avoid spreading is sending people who sneeze and cough home, to go in quarantine until they are tested or better.

If you want to minimise spreading / risks. Dont go into public transport, don't visit parties or events.

If it is located allready in you’re area/ neighbourhood. Avoid physical social contact. Keep a 2 meter distance. Pick up you’re phone, skype to have contact.

Eventually this virus spreads worldwide but its important to slow the spreading, to buy time to get organised and manufacture all the means we need to handle this problem.

Main problem is that the hospitals can’t help you anymore if you get a severe lung problem and the amount of infestations have gone sky high. Younger people get into trouble too. People do have better chances to survive with the right medical care.

Here in Europe we don't have enough means and medical staf to help everyone. Thats why Italy and Spain are in quarantine right now. It seems that other parts of Europe are following.

This is why it is so important to slow down this Corona.

P.s. stocking toilet paper is what people do because they feel the need to copy behaviour when panicking. If you think clearly you know its makes no sense. There is no shortage in stock and easy to produce more.
Yea im a loner stay home most if the time i dont do parties. Only my dad visits my house. I have one daughter in college one in HS and one in elementary. Their spring break just started and so far only the college kiddo has had her suspended classes and moved online. No cases here yet. And as for toiletries i bought everything i needed at Sams about 3 weeks ago. With teenagers TP is something I always stock up. They dont go partying yet (Thank God)!! i had a friend call me yesterday and said hey now it’s your time to shine they are out of eggs in the grocery store can I have some? I had offer her some before and she said ewww those look gross do they really come out of the chickens butt!? Some people cant put two and two together and....fyi we are in our 40s Lol !! Too bad someone had beat it to it. I have a big veggie garden too and grew up eating basic meals of beans and rice. I think im pretty much prepared with the basics. I dont have social media and that helps keeping the panic craze down. I do stay informed though.
