Canadians not only live longer than Americans, they are vigorous, well-cared for and active in their communities at advanced ages. I can tell you, as I get older, and I'm 73, I would MUCH rather be a Canadian senior citizen!

I have also, because my husband has cardiac issues and I've been in Canadian emergency rooms and intensive care units, I've heard an end of life consultation between a doctor and the surviving adult kids of someone who was at the end of their life. It was dignified, warm and caring for the needs of both the patient and the survivors.

You're kidding yourself if you think it doesn't happen in Canada. My friend Hollyann is Canadian. She hates the healthcare system in Canada, because it killed her dad. They prioritized him lower, due to his age (60s) when he go cancer. He died waiting in line for treatment, because younger folks got in first. Free healthcare is worthless if you can't even get treated. Sad but true story.

They're doing something similar in the US now that COVID is putting a strain on the nation, to be fair. They only didn't have to before because people just died. My mom died of cancer at 60 because she couldn't afford to go see a doctor until it was too late.

Easy, everyone -- no one can see the future, and some people are just trying to be optimistic about this virus problem. Who knows; maybe it will be better in a few weeks. Maybe not. We can only wait and see, and hope for the best.

Pathogens don't act one way in one country and another way in another country.

There is so much more to epidemiology than just numbers.

Viruses are continually changing/adapting they are not static pathogens. Some attenuate others strengthen. Recent information from France indicates that half of the critical cases there are in individuals younger than 60.

why just travel to mexico for dental and medical treatment? why not just go and stay there if you hate the USA that much!! A mechanic can charge $80/hr avg in labor + parts A hairdresser can charge $20 for a simple haircut But a dentist is just a crook if they charge anything for their time or parts after making over $1M investment in education and technology not to mention rent, taxes, insurance etc!!! but i suppose you travel to mexico for all that stuff too.
My apologies to the OP.......I just could not hold my tongue on this subject any longer being on the flip side of healthcare and trying to keep from going bankrupt and feed my family through this same coronavirus crisis!

It is an emotional subject. Today I decided to stop freaking out about viruses and economic disaster. I am going to concentrate on whatever I can keep myself doing to take care of husband and myself. The president said they expect things to get better by July. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But I am sure if I grow more than we and the animals need, I can share with others. Let's try to think of solutions, instead of picking on others. Each person has the right to choose where they go for health care etc. Let's use our increased time at home to strengthen our relationships with loved ones. And maybe do all those things we have been putting off.

Thanks, it was years ago and I'm mostly past it. I still burn her candle on the solstices etc and all that. But the point is for every "My uncle/etc got triage'd out and couldn't get care for X time period" , there's a story in the USA of "I just couldn't afford to go so I just didn't until I was so sick I was literally dying".
And now that the USA has a major health crisis we're triaging just like every other country does.

It sucks, but our current method tends to be, are you lucky enough or rich enough to have healthcare? No? Then you don't see a doctor unless you are flat broke. Whatever tack you wanna take on it there's better choices and they have to make sense and function. Like a medical savings account won't do any good if someone doesn't have money to save. We already spend all the money in question on healthcare each year, just in a different format. I'd love to see that money funding more people who really need it instead of insurance investments, stock brokers and CEOs.

I assume you just bring them to a boil and it's fine?

I presoak and drain all beans out of habit, but kidney beans are the only one I make sure to get to a rolling boil for 10 minutes.

Gosh now I want some red beans and rice... yum.

Bring to a boil and reduce heat and let them cook down all day to thicken up. Along with a roux, onions, garlic, bell pepper, celery, tasso, and smoked sausage. And seasonings served over rice with corn bread or French bread
