My vocal cords don't like it when I scream, though. 🤣
Is tooting the air horn an acceptable substitute? It might set the guineas off, too, and that's plenty of noise.

Yes, 10/10 do encourage. My dad used to use a trombone when I was a wee child, and I'd use a bugle. Straight out the front door into our peaceful suburb. XD

I'm going old school and banging pots and pans outside my door at midnight. >( My mom always said you gotta scare the old year away. Seems prudent this year. I'm not taking any chances.

Gonna channel this lady. Same energy.

Probably gonna stay inside otherwise and drink something strong. Tequila rose? Hot cocoa with Kahlua?
I love this! I'm gonna be that old lady this year! Cracks me up!

I've only purchased one dog in my life, too, Everyone else has been a rescue - most of them found me, not the other way around. My sole puppy purchase presented an interesting challenge.
I had only recently moved away from home and was having serious pet-withdrawal. I desperately needed a dog! The other half understood ... sortof ... but really didn't want a dog, or anything else, for that matter. He put a lot of restrictions on what he would accept:

Had to be a purebred - which ruled out the peke-a-poo I wanted.
Had to be a puppy - I wanted an older dog, because it's easier for puppies to find homes.
Had to be female - I like my boys and female purebreds are 'spensive!
Had to be under 30 pounds - okay, we lived in a townhouse, I got that one.
Couldn't be yappy - which ruled out pretty much every terrier breed and small poodles
Couldn't be shipped, which left us within a three hour radius.
My one restriction was that I wanted longer hair. I like to bury my fingers in floof! That ruled out all the smooth-coated breeds.

With all the caveats, he really figured to remain dogless for quite some time, but he seriously underestimated me! With all the restrictions, I narrowed it down to a Lhasa Apso and a Shih Tzu. The Lhasa was bigger, but temperament won and I ended up with my little Shih Tzu. I loved her dearly - and always will, but I will NEVER purchase a dog again! She was, without a doubt, the dumbest, most hard-headed animal I have ever owned or been owned by!
With that in mind, I have to add that whatever she lacked in intelligence, she made up for in personality. She was a BLAST! We had SO many fun adventures, together. We are the reason why our local mall has "No pets allowed" signs on all the doors. I took her in for pictures with Santa (what can I say? I was childless and she was spoiled!) Most people thought it was cute, but there were, of course, complaints from a few patrons and staff. When security approached me over it, I innocently pointed out that nowhere did it say I could not bring a leashed, well-behaved pet inside. They couldn't argue, but we got an escort to Santa. The irritated guard waited while we got our pictures taken, then escorted us back out. Santa LOVED her, BTW. I went back the next day (Sunday) to actually shop, and lo and behold, there were "No Pets Allowed" stickers on all the doors. I lost it! I laughed so hard I couldn't stand up. On the rare occasion when I make it back that far into civilization, it still makes me smile!
Wow lots of restrictions! :ep meanwhile I don’t think SIL even asked before bringing their most recent dog home :lau or most of them 😂🤣 I probably would have just gotten the kind of dog I wanted regardless 😂🤣 bring that older boy doggie home! 😁 but I’m glad you ended up finding such a great dog though. :love and that is hilarious about the signs! :lau :gig :lau

And for me, I’ve never really had a well bred dog from a good breeder before so I want to try it at least once. My family doesn’t really get it since they’ve always just gotten free dogs or classified dogs or whatever and they’ve been fantastic dogs, the best dogs ever, etc. and DB & SIL are huge into rescue now (though do support responsible breeders).

I do love rescues too but I just have never really done the breeder thing before and want to try it. I loved all our other dogs but they all had their own issues 😂🤣 which I know purebreds can too and every rescue I’ve met has been amazing and great dogs. DB and SIL’s are beautiful, well trained, etc. but idk, I just wanna try the breeder route this time lol

Would have loved a well-bred, purebred Sheltie this time, too. But to only find pet quality pups starting at $2,000 and going up from there... and knowing I could not get one anyway bc I do not have a fenced yard ... yeah, no. So we found Sammy, at the time 16 mo old, too much dog for an old couple with health issues. He had behavioral issues but has worked out great! Like The Kid whose companion he is, Sammy's a bit ADHD, lol, so they get along well! 😊

Yeah, they’re definitely quite expensive now! And weird thing is that’s almost considered “cheap” in some breeds cause some of them go up to like 3, 4, 5K or more! :ep :th mostly in the “rare” and less common breeds but still! Seems quite common for Goldens to be like $2-3K now.

Seems like even just a few years ago most breeders were like $1500-$2000 or maybe $2500 but now most are $2-3K it seems. :th at least in my area! My area is more expensive though. I think if/when I got one, I would look elsewhere as there are areas where they are still cheap haha

I have considered rescues too but even the rescues in my area are like $500-$700 now by the time you add in the “transport fees” and vetting and stuff cause they ship all the dogs up from the south :th so it’s like, you might as well just pay a bit more and get a purebred since you’re halfway there anyway! :th plus the ridiculous requirements most have now!! They wouldn’t even let me adopt probably.

I honestly might just go to Craigslist or something and cut out the middle man :lau 🙈 since they’re the same dogs that end up in shelters anyway! I wouldn’t get a puppy from there of course but could maybe find a nice rescue. Idk.

Everything has gotten so crazy expensive though! Especially the rescues charging purebred prices :th and also the fact they even need to ship dogs since there evidently aren’t enough here :th

I have a whole different take on this. For me, the only cure for the ache in my heart when losing a Sheltie, is another Sheltie. I'm not faulting anyone for doing different, I just can't live without one. I feel much the same about Goldens, but I haven't been able to fill that hole in many, many years, so the ache remains, but I absolutely would if I could. No dog can replace another, it's not like that. I just HAVE to have a Sheltie to love, though each one is different.
I see the logic in that.

At the time my dog chose me I was not looking to be a dog owner (recent move, trying to adjust to a new career, etc) so this was not planned at all! I even had to turn around and move again in order to have him, which I happily did.

I've always had dogs or cats, but when his long and wonderful life was over I needed time. A lot of time. During the interim quite a few other animals in need and/or rescues have found me so I have been busy helping them. Once upon a time I was a licensed wildlife rehabber so there have always been animals around me in need, be it wildlife or pets.
So in a sense I filled the hole, just not with another GSD.
