I just came home an hour ago from a chick expedition for a friend, her new chicks are in my garage right now. But we decided to go out and see my birds before she left and I found one with a really puffy face, she was not like this yesterday. I pulled her out immediately and put her in the quarantine pen. Waited to see if there would be poo before posting but so far nothing so I took pics.

Vitals first:
1) What type of bird , age and weight.
Silkie, approx 2 years old
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
No odd behavior noticed yesterday, haven't been home enough today to tell
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Today only
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
n/a
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
n/a
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
As far as I can tell she's been eating normal, layer pellets and the occasional treat
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Nothing yet, still waiting
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
quarantine, trying to figure out what this is before treatment
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Treat myself
10) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
pics below
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use
open run, sandy soil floor with grass clippings

More info....
This doesn't smell anymore than wet feathers do. It's crusty around the nostrils not sticky. This was NOT there last night when we put them up. She's a little slow but not inactive. Mushy where it's swollen if that helps.

Feed stores close in an hour if I need to go get antibiotics, just need to know what it is first. This is one of hubby's silkies, she's one of his better girls, hope it's not coryza! Don't think he'd forgive me for culling.

Ok.... poo is normal

Anyone? Since she is still lively is it possible this is just a respiratory thing that can be treated with Tylan?

I'm running into town now to get it before the place closes so I don't have to wait until monday

If it were Coryza it would smell bad. So, I've read..... I haven't had one yet with it. But, they say it smells pretty bad. I would treat with Tylan for 3 days and see if she starts to improve.

So how do we do the Tylan? All I could find was Tylan 50 injectable. I have 3 cc syringes with the 22ga sharps and I have diabetic U-100 and U-40 syringes with the 29ga sharps. Not sure how much to give a little silkie!

I also picked up tetracyclene for water if it's needed.

To me it looks more like a swollen eye then one swollen from Coryza or MG infection. Typically with those the sinus in front of the eye will be swollen or the eye will develop puss.If it gets worse, Tylan 50, I would give a 1/4 cc under tented neck skin and a few small drops in the mouth and one in the eye.

We just checked the birds again and I now have a second silkie with this

She literally looked perfect just 3 hours ago.

1/4cc sub q.... got it.

I would dilute the Tylan 1:4 ratio with Saline, if your putting it their eyes. It's only one drop in each eye. Give 1/4 cc by mouth. It's much easier than giving shots if your not accustomed to giving shots. It works just as good in the mouth.

Bubbly eyes, could indicate a respiratory disorder. I would do a search of bubbly eyes.

I had a diabetic cat for years and now have a renal failure dog I give sub-q fluids to...... shots are noooo problem

Got all the adults injected, let's hope this starts helping.
