Cost efficient ways to feed chickens organic layer feed and scraps

Ok? I read thru it all again, I still see 13 birds and 16 cups of feed plus scraps and veggies- so not sure why you are pointing out the editing like I have overlooked something? Lisachick, in my opinion you are feeding at the low end of the spectrum for chickens. I know nothing about ducks, but if your birds seem hungry, and they are able to free range for exercise, I would go back to your original plan of feed available at all times and sweetly tell hubby to get over it. You may find that at peak lay times you can sell eggs to friends and neighbors to recoup some cost. Maybe that will help him accept it.

Even where I live, in central CA no snow on the ground, there is zip for forage this time of year. My birds have feed available all the time and they do consume more in the winter. I think I would try giving your birds free feed access for a while and see how it goes. The other down side to scheduled feedings twice a day is that very hungry birds will tend to gobble down a lot of food fast, rather then filling their crops slowly over the course of the day, with crop impaction being a possible result.

I was just going to start a thread about How much feed per bird when I came across this one , so seeing a 50lb. bag of chicken layer pellets up here in Ma. is about $11.51 that's $ .23* per lb. .......so roughly 2 lbs. per chicken daily = $.46 cent daily ...........so it costs me about $.55 cents a day for that one egg ......LOL........and if selling eggs then it's cost a total of about $ .60 cents an egg , ...........mmmmm ...............
I would have to sell a doz. of farm fresh eggs up here for $7.00 and that's on the low end of cost .

Now if your buying grain in bulk, then you maybe saving a few cents per bag , up here I save $.50 cent a bag if purchase 10 -50lb bags ($5.00) so this cuts my cost down a whole penny per lb. .................... WOW $.44 cent per bird /daily to feed per egg.................Sure Glad I enjoy raising chickens as a Hobby of Mind and not as a full time Job or even extra cash flow ..............
.......................................Food 4 Thought & Enjoying my Hobby ....................
...............Hate to see what it costing me to feed my Turkeys and ducks ............
