Oct 1 purchased 25 female chicks, received 28, 2 peanuts and a rare one. 1 DOA on arrival. All others lived. Peanuts female.
March 15 sold last of those not keeping
Purchase and feed costs $235
Sold 17 $165
Kept 8 females and 1 roo

I figure I am about even given I still have the layers and eggs forever.
 
In my opinion, once you have your birds AND your coop, etc. you will be lucky to get enough eggs to "break-even" on just your feed costs. (as compared to buying eggs at the grocery store). And THAT is assuming that you SELL some of your eggs to your friends and neighbors.
