Cotunix Quail Flavor

I agree that dove tastes like liver!

I've never tried Bob Whites or Coturnix. We are just starting our flock of Cots.

But years ago we had Gamble. And we did find the taste of captive bred to be a little sweeter (I guess you could say) than wild.
So we looked into ways to add to their diet or a more natural food, and found that to help bring the flavor closer to a wild gamble.

When you wrap the birds in beacon to cook, do they take on some of the beacon flavor? I know it's to help keep them from drying out, but i'm not overly fond of beacon. lol...

Here's my Take on comparing the 2 birds and I was raised on Hunting and eating Bobwhites. Bobwhites to me are #1 far as taste and texture.

Coturnix is also very good, a little different taste, but IMHO they are #2...But they also are quite tasty,... love both of them Flour battered and fried, then make some Milk Gravy and Homemade Biscuits and Fries

YUM YUM!!

Critter Place, I'm not big into bacon except with some eggs or a BLT myself. One of my brothers loads his venison burger down with bacon and I don't like it at all. Besides, I don't see how a strip of bacon can make a dove taste any better anyway. Best thing I figure for them is to cook them like carp. Get some cow poop and slather it all over the carp/dove. Put it in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour. Take it out, throw away the carp/dove and eat the cow poop!

Hey, how do coturnix eggs taste? Or is that another one of those things that just has its own flavor? I love pickled eggs, so even if I don't like the quail, which I think I will, I will still have a good reason to hang on to them. I figure pickled quail eggs would probably sell pretty good too.

Pickled coturnix eggs sell VERY well from what I read, maybe better than pickled chicken eggs. I've also read that they taste very much like a chicken egg just 1/3-1/4 of the size. If you want to just fry them though I'd look into these little quail egg clippers you can buy on the internet for $5-$10.

Hey Rittert3, thanks for the reply. What in the world is a quail egg clipper? Something that makes breaking open the little egg easier? Guess I could google it, but I'd rather talk to you guys.

Ok I would recomend googling Quail egg shell cutter, they make it so you don't get a bunch of shell in your eggs. This korin.com sells them and has a good picture of them.

ETA: you can also do a byc search there was a thread about them started 2/13/10
I just bumped it to the top of the quail fourm

Hi Orange Ribbon,
I love your idea of how to cook carp!

I come from a hunting and fishing family, grew up with it and know all about catching the dreaded carp! LOL!!!

As far as quail eggs, I"ve been looking into them all week for the nutritional value. I've found some pretty interesting stuff on them!

Far better for you than a chicken egg it seems. I told hubby we may have to double the original plans of the flock so we have plenty to share with family.

Here's some of the info I found. I haven't tasted them yet, but can say a home grown chicken egg is Ten times better than a store bought!

I don't know as I could eat raw eggs by themselves no matter what the benifits, I did have a bananna milk "protein" shake one time with raw eggs and wasn't able to taste them maybe that would be an alternative to just eating the raw eggs. Thanks for the interesting link.
