Can A & M coturnix have a few colored feathers or are they always solid white ?
I'm new to these guys and have a couple of youngsters which are 96% + white with a couple of brown/black feathers coming in.
Are they poorly marked A&M's or poorly marked tux's or something else ?

They are cute regardless

I'm just curious.

That is normal, it is a kick back to the brown's coming out in them. That is where they obtained their bigger size.

Those are normal A & Ms, solid white A & Ms aren't really the norm. I was lucky and got them by breeding A & M to A & M and then selectively breeding them and I think they are goregous they remind me of doves. A & Ms can come in any spotted colors.

However if you know where your white birds with spots came from you can assess some things. Like I have a bird that is mostly white with black on the back, it's not an A & M it came from my Tuxedo line so it's actually just a highly white marked tuxedo

Basically heres a good way to know they are A & Ms, if the spots are golden or brown

However A & ms also have tibetan spots which doesn't mean they aren't A & Ms. It's safe to say your birds are A & Ms because not everyone is breeding pure Tuxedo to Tuxedo but if they say they are and that's all you're getting eggs from then if you get pure whites, whites with patches and tuxedos it's safe to say they are truely Tuxedos of different intensities.

BTW yes that one bird is a pure white Tuxedo x Tuxdeo

But yes you're right that they obtained their large size by Jumbo browns. They crossed english white to jumbo brown.

The kick back is actually getting pure white A & Ms as that's the kick back to the English white

An A & M is basically a pumped (from jumbo brown) up English white

Are these from my birds?

I get a lot of pure white hatchlings, but I believe a lot of them are from my tuxedos. I only have 1 pure white hen, and the roo is almost pure white. The others don't have too much brown on them, but they do have it.

But yes, it is normal for the A&M to have brown on them, I think they are kind of supposed to be like that

Yep Shelley, they are from your birds.
Not much in the way of colored feathers that's why I wondered if it was normal. They are very intresting. One just has a couple of colored tail feathers.

monarc23 - thanks for the info and photos. It's intresting learning about the different colors
