Coturnix colors

I've been keeping my quail on dirt in an 8'x8' ''tractor'' for a while now - they love the bugs they can get in the dirt and making dust-baths - the first week after a day or so on a new spot is icky, but when it starts to look icky, then I put a layer of shavings and from then on it stays pretty nice! My 9 hens (with 2 roo's) are laying at *least* one egg a day each, sometimes I get as much as 18 eggs in one day!

I wonder if it's just golden that is bred lighter and lighter over several generations?

ironsun would know the answer for sure on that

I know in rabbits, reds, oranges, and fawns are all the same basic genotype - it is color modifiers called ''rufus'' that make them look different by how intense the color is. Just makes me wonder if it could be the same in these intriguing little quail!

Hi,

The fawn gold is a variety on it's own, just like the fawn is. They are a combination of both gold and fawn. When they are bred, the normal black feathers of the gold, have been replaced by fawn.

I've bred them in Cinnamon and platinum (this bird looks very simular to the Normal type cream), but I'm sure you could breed them in both silver and cream too.

The males of both cinnamon and fawn golds are striking looking birds, and look totally different from normal golds.

I believe you could be right on this, I've been thinking the same way myself for months now. Not knowing much about genentics or have enough experiance on colour breeding, I don't know yet.
The pattern here seems to be, Normal, Cinnamon and fawn or, Platinum, Silver and cream.

Until I've done my 9 breeding experiments I'll not know, but I'm working on getting the right colour pairing together now.

I do Like them. They are very pretty! Next season I hopefully will have the incubator empty when everyone is still selling and not sold out of golden eggs. So pretty!
