Coturnix ear infections?

Hi all,

Anyone had a coturnix with an ear infection before? I know it sounds odd. I had a female who started to tilt her head to one side constantly and lose her balance, but she was eating fine, just didn't seem to be able to stay upright. I thought maybe a headbonk and brain injury (though she had no external injury) but today I saw gunk hardened on the outside of her ear that is on the tilted side. I cleaned it off and put some antibiotic drops in. Her ears look kinda swollen.

Anyone else had this happen before? What was your outcome? I've had ear infections in guinea pigs that swiftly proved fatal even with prompt vet care and ABs, but never in a bird before.

How interesting! I thought I had seen it all over the years, but never an ear infection. At least you were able to spot it and begin treating it. Keep us posted on the outcome as I am always interested in learning new ways to treat quail. :)

Are you able to see if there are any mites? They can be a common cause of ear infection so just something else to look for while you're treating. I haven't seen ear infections in birds before myself either, like you I've only dealt with them in rodents(well, also in humans of course).
Good luck with this little one, let us know how the treatment goes and if the bird regains balance. It would also be great to know what drops you used when the bird makes a full recovery.

Cheers,
Jessie

Hi I too have a quil
With what believe may be an eat infection with similar symptoms poor balance I brought her inside and put in a small cage so she’d be less likely to hurt herself flipping about. The ear looks better on the outside but she still can’t stay upright falls over on her back and shaking her head

That being said, has your quail hit its head? How long has it had balance issues?
