So the nails of my coturnixes have gotten too long. Two of them broke off a nail and that can't be good. I tried to cut them but the nail bled both times, even cutting more than 2/3rds of the way. Is bleeding normal or do you have to cut near the very tip? I'm not sure if cutting just the tip would help much.

I have to cut my roosters nails do to his disability. There should be no bleeding when doing this. I cut only the tips of his toenails, where I see the most curving. Putting something hard, like concrete or stone next to their feeder helps preventing this procedure.

I have a wood base that I cover with a mix of dirt, pebbles, and mulch, along with some bricks they walk on to trim nails. One brick chunk will do wonders once they figure out how to use it!

I use small dog nail clippers as necessary. (I also have bricks and cinderblocks in their cages.) Just look for where the quick is and do NOT cut that.
