Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

I heard you need to be certified to sell dressed quail, but could u sell the quail and then get them to pay to have them butchered, or maybe sell live meat birds for 50 cent more than breeders and butcher them for free? Without having to be certified.

I just got done going though all 149 pages of this tread and I am amazed that everybody brings up there chicken posts. This is not a thread for your dam chickens it's for quail. I understand that most of us also own chickens including me , but if I want to learn about silkies or any other chicken breed I will go to that forum. So please if you are not talking quail go to the chicken forums.

Please don't take it wrong but this is for quail not chickens and I mean no offensive to any body but I read so many post about chickens in this thread just to get some basic info about quail it was very hard to get the info I was looking for. So please if it is regards to your chickens put it in the chicken forum. If it's quail please put it here, I have learned so much from this forum about quail but I don't need your chicken info they are very two different birds.

My big male is crowing! I have another male, and maybe a third, trying to. So far my whites are still quiet... Wouldn't it be funny if I ended up with 11 hens?

They're about 6 weeks old now. I should be expecting eggs any day. Do I need to add a hiding spot to the pen? Or will they lay wherever Willy nilly?

I heard they will lay anywhere.

I'v actually seen a coturnix lay a egg standing at the feeder and never acted like it was her..... Kinda like passing gas in Wal-mart...... If you give them a sand box they will lay a high % of their eggs there. Otherwise, you'll find them where ever the birds are when the egg is ready......

How do you sex the male with the foamy stuff technique, were you mash there butt or something.

If your ok with handle'n "toilet parts"....Just apply a small amount of pressure with your thumb and forefinger. Just above and below the vent...... just enough to make it pucker a bit should work. You will also find foam in a hen's vent from time to time if she is in a pen with a cock bird. A crowing bird is much more dependable. If they are remove from the group, one at a time, like in a small cage alone. Where they can see the the others but not get to them. A cock will usually crow non-stop....
