Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Our weather has been overcast or very rainy. Sucks. It's like trying to walk through soup. Hopefully this nastiness will clear up... It'd be nice to get some more quail eggs.
x2

Out of 20 hens collected three eggs ( all from my whites ) in the last three days. Don't want to add supplemental light, though, as I don't have room in the 'bator just yet. So it's a catch 22 here.

Do white Coturnix lay later or not as much as the brown? This is my second time trying the white ones and, at almost 9 weeks, still no eggs. The last time I tried the white ones I gave up on them at 5 months and ate them all as they never gave me any eggs at all.

My whites and browns all start laying at 6-8 weeks. Maybe the strain of whites you got is just not productive? What are you feeding? They should have between 24-30% protein for good egg production.

You have to remember people, it's not sun that keeps them laying... it's overall how much daylight they get (e.g Dawn till Dusk. Turn on the full spectrum light and they should be back to normal in a few weeks.
Good post but...Its all about how long people want to keep the same birds. I have hens I keep a lot longer, big girls. Its all about how each person chooses to keep their quail. I do like a large bird, but also want friendly hens. We rotate our stock around a year old. I have a golden thats almost 3 she is more a pet.

Speckles still lays 5 out of 7 days. nice big hen. She has gave me hundreds of eggs and still produces. That is what I call a good hen! I do use artificial light about 4 months a year.

How does a candled cotournix quail egg look like when been on the incubator from 8-10 days? I'm nervous my eggs are that old and wanna see how there supposed to look if there's a chick in there.

You should start to be able to see some veins inside the eggs at this stage. Coturnix eggs can be hard to candle if they are too mottled, but there should be a spider like vein system growing by day 8.
