Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

If it has it you should see somthing along the lines of a drug information plus most feed is made of things you will recognize such corn, wheat, calcium, if you don't recognize an ingredient it may be somthing you don't want them to eat.

A quick search turned up a short list of feed additive medications, not all of these are used in quail feed typically but I thought I would include them all. Avatec(Lasalocid), BMD(Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate), Bio-Cox(Salinomycin), Coban(Monensin), Corid(Amprolium), CTC(Chlortetracycline), Rofenaid(Sulfadimethoxine and Ormetoprim). You may also see copper added(though I don't recall which species of livestock it is and is not okay to give copper supplements to), while not a medication per se it is therapeutic in that certain parasites are killed by contact with copper.
A medicated feed will have the name of the medication, the percentage or amount to volume, and usually what it treats. If you see any registered brand name looking that up should yield a medication product sheet, or if you see any of the generic names above. Anything outside of that list you can try to look up if it looks out of place on your ingredient list.

Personally I am in favor of keeping hygienic conditions, quarantining incoming animals, and only treating animals if or when needed. Chronically medicating well animals means that any ailment able to survive and effect them will be resistant to the medication, reducing your options for treating it and breeding stronger, more medication resistant, diseases.

As said before, it all breaks down to personal preference in husbandry practices.

Cheers,
Jessie

If it doesnt come out of the ground, good bet you dont want it

Right. I try to keep a check on what I WANT in my product rather than what I don't want. Such as cleaners, body products , and all food. Nix the parabens, sulfates, petroleum , synthetic sugar substitutes and over processed items from the shopping list and watch that list shrink !
With the birds I think I just figured " it's the only pick at the feed store" but if these pets are producing part of our diet I should handle it the way I do everything else!

Everyone has their own priority list of course, I just personally get distracted from my personal standards by being overwhealmed- lol-

Monarc23, thank you so much for taking the time to type up such detailed information. I know I'm late to the party but it helped so much! Now I just have 85 more pages to read though! :)

Im new to quails, I recantly acquired five chicks, I believe they are pharaohs but I am not sure due to the fact they have to odd white feathers. Is that normal?

Ive had a few pharaohs with white feathers when they were young then they lose them or they get hidden under other feathers. I cracked it up to a color variation like cinnimon but I'm not sure. I was told by another they may have a&m genes in them somewhere. I don't raise mine for specific color yet. I breed for size of bird and egg so I'm not as concerned with color. This means whom ever you got your chicks from may breed the same way. Some prefer to breed true to color.
