This thread seems to be the best place to post my question. We just recently bought 20 courtnix quail, and then today bought 40 more. We would like to hatch some of the eggs and have been reading up on it but still have one question. Do the eggs hatch best upright or on thier sides? If so upright then on what side (narrow or wider up), and if we had to manually turn them (we are looking into rehabing an old hotdog warmer for the turning) which way?

If you have an auto-turner, then pointy end down in the turner. If you put them on their sides, you'll be rolling them around turning them by hand, so it doesn't matter. Just do it 3-5 times a day, and they'll be fine. If you use an old hotdog warmer, then just lay them on their sides.

Thanks for the welcome! I had to come and see what my mom (luvmygirlsinAK) was spending hour upon hour doing.

Now I may be the one spending hours here too!

Thanks for the info, it helps, now my hubby and brother are looking at converting a tiny fridge into an incubator... We'll see.... Who knows what well end up with two Mr. Visionaries!


My hubby wants me to ask, how does an auto turner work? Does it tilt the egg from side to side?

I saw your website a couple of months ago, I forget how I found it but I have enjoyed it, it's neat to see someone I have heard of!

The turner just tips them from side to side, at least most turners do. You can simulate a turner by putting the eggs in a carton and raising one end of the carton, thereby tipping them to one side. When you "turn", you just switch the ends that are raised up.
My husband built a turner for my homemade cooler-'bator, by mounting a frame for a carton on a piece of PVC pipe that the carton pivots on. Then you just turn the pipe back and forth from the outside, and the carton tips from side to side.
If you check out the incubator thread in Miss Prissy's signature line, there are instructions for building a homemade incubator. You could SO do it with a mini fridge.

One thing to potentially add under the 'noises' section:

- Repeated high pitch noises - "eeeeeeeeee" "eeeeeeeee" "eeeeeeeee" coming from a hen is the "egg song".

- Roos crow: It's less loud than a chicken, more loud than a finch.

Time to put more eggs in!!
