Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Hahahaha!
My hens first egg was smallish and really round. It was dark with very speckly spots on it, no splotches just light speckling. I was thinkin i wonder if she was afraid to lay her first egg.. cause that one looks overcooked she must have kept it in too long! ;)

It wasnt that dark and it was regular shell texture. I will have to see if photobucket will cooperate with my cell enough to post a pic.

I call those little ones warm up eggs, that one in the photo is the strangest I ever got, I'm pretty sure his mom laid the egg that looks like jupiter. oddly the shape is perfect and aesthetically
pleasing.

My quail are doing great. Some are going on 5 weeks old. When should hey start to lay? At what age are they ready to harvest. I have 12 now ranging from 5-3 weeks of age. I want to keep a couple of roos and hens to go with them. What is the recommended ratio? How much room do I need to provide for them? Do I need to keep each roo separated. I'm going to assume they should not be allowed to free range if I ever want to see them again...

Hens lay at 8 weeks usually and never stop after that. Some will lay as early as 6 weeks.
I let my birds meant for food go til they are worth processing, at close to a pound and when I have time to do it.

They'll stop laying every year when they molt. Depending on where you live, they will stop laying in either december or january will stay off until almost may, unless you are providing supplemental lighting.

Everyone thank you so much for the information and advice. I'm in the mountains of North Georgia. So South, but we still get a couple of cold months in the winter with snow and ice. Speaking of which... What kind of housing do they need in the winter?
