The turner just tips them from side to side, at least most turners do. You can simulate a turner by putting the eggs in a carton and raising one end of the carton, thereby tipping them to one side. When you "turn", you just switch the ends that are raised up.
My husband built a turner for my homemade cooler-'bator, by mounting a frame for a carton on a piece of PVC pipe that the carton pivots on. Then you just turn the pipe back and forth from the outside, and the carton tips from side to side.
If you check out the incubator thread in Miss Prissy's signature line, there are instructions for building a homemade incubator. You could SO do it with a mini fridge.

Thanks for the info! My hubby and brother decided to go ahead and make the incubator out of the fridge. They drilled quail egg holes into some boards and they have that on a rotator. It's going to be a neat incubator. I can't wait for them to finish it!​

I have 24 golden quail eggs in the incubator right now. They are on day 4.

I made a thread and asked this question but I'll ask it here too. How soon can I tell gender on coturnix quail? What do I look for? Mine are 2 1/2 weeks old and I'm seeing red on the breasts of some of them.

Goldens and browns, the males will start getting a rusty (redish i guess youc ould call it he he) breast, some call the color salmon... this is the male. As he gets older it will get more defined and pretty. The hens will have obvious spots of black on their breasts, they MAY have some rust, but for the most part their breasts will be spotted with black on a tan background with possibly some white (it's the same for both goldens and browns). Other colors are VERY hard to tell.

Males can start calling as early as 4 weeks old- but it depends on the conditions you keep them in (if under lights atleast 14 hours a day they-will crow and be laying eggs as soon as 6-8 weeks old)!

My brown male started crowing at 4 weeks which was pretty funny. Sounds nothinglike a rooster chicken crow by the way. It's got a garbled sound to it to me it sounds like they're saying "how'm i doin!?" others say its saying ""co-tur-nix" but i dont think it sounds like that at all lol!

I have notice in the past couple of days that my pair of Coturnix

these 2 i hatch from Tori's eggs

anyways..

i lets them out there cage sometimes and they walk all around and whatever and i gets treats for them and when i put the treat on the floor...the male Coturnix will pick the treat up then fluff his feathers out and make this sound like a call sound and he holds the treat until the female gets to him and he gives it to her

it's like chickens ...

if you have a rooster..

but if you don't and you have seen someone else feed there chickens and when the rooster gets to the food he makes this ( cluck cluck ) sound and all the hens come running to him and he lets them eat first

i just think it's way cute

My buttons do that too! The males will pick up a small seed and make a different chirping sound and the females will take it right out of his mouth! They are very cute!
