Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Its a good possibility that the others were picking on it , i two males together and the one male picked on the other male and the same thing , so i had to separate the males

That was my thought as well; they'll reach maturity any time now. Was hoping that separate cages would fix problem. Will see. Still don't know how to tell gender, but I will figure it out

I luckily had a another cage ready , but i put neosporin on its wounds and placed him with a female , when i went to clean their cage i placed him back in with others and the other male went after him within seconds , so i just let them free in the main pen for cleaning now , you have a&ms let me see see if i can help you find out how to sex them

I think on all types of quails if you press around the vents lightly and white foam comes out they are males , i have conturnix quails so i can visually tell because the markings on the chest

What the hell, One of my females Coturnix escaped only after < 2 days of purchasing it. :'(

AND it was my only current layer. :/

This is my current set up. WARNING: NOT A BUILDER. :lau

I'm going to raise it up off the ground. I never think things through and it's a major pain in the arse to access because it's enclosed within another enclosure.

How many quail do you think I can comfortably put inside?

I currently now have 2 males, 3 females...

In a space of less than 1 month, I lost 3 pullets and 1 quail. :rant

Im sure it you raise the quail pen you will put a secure bottom. Did she escape from the bottom? Anyway, I learned the hard way (skunk intrusion) that you need to have a very secure bottom to protect quail from digging predators. My current set-up has a hardwire bottom enclosure.
Regarding quail comfort, I think if you put in some material for them to hide in such as brush, hay or the such you can comfortably fit more. Mine seem to like to get away from the others from time to time.

Leave food and water and your maverick quail should be back to eat and visit the captives. My cots are easy to catch. They know who feeds them and come out of hiding to be picked up and put back. lol. Stupid California took me 2 weeks to catch.

You will want the bottom wire fixed so nothing can get under them and eat their little toes off that stick through the wire. My mom's toy poodle taught us that lesson 35 years ago. Gross!

so many quail people out there I want to know if anyone is successful with keeping males and females together. I have 25 quail all hatched together. I was going to build a coop 4'x8' with a 4'x8' run not sure how high to make them. Wondering if you all think I will have problems with them fighting? I mostly want the eggs but may hatch some out in the future. I have about 9 males in the group.

Im estimating I have about 50/50 split on my quail population, maybe even more males than femalews. I keep them in a very large aviary (18' by 10' by 12' tall) with lots of places to hide. I have no problems with fighting...yet. It is early in the mating season though so things could change. I dont cull any of my birds as they are pets. I hope it remains calm with just a lot of case- playing like I have seen so far. My population is from less than a year to probably just over a year old with maybe a few 2 years old.

I really think that the number of males successfully kept in a group depends a lot on the size of the enclosure and if there are hiding places for them the hide away in when they want to escape the masses.
