Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

What is the expected lifespan of coturnix quail by the way?

I had a skunk dig into my pen and kill most of my females which really upset the balance. I also just hatched out a full male group so Im over-run with males. I am in the process of purchasing females to get a better balance. It is slow as I can only get a few females a week.

So many of my males are going on or are just over one year. Im wondering when natural attrition might help with my correcting this unbalance. I dont eat and I dont want to sell or give any of my males away for eating so I need to keep them throughout their natural lifespan that I why I ask.

I've seen posts here and other places where folks have Coturnix Quail for 4 and 5 years. One person I saw said they had a 7 year old. Of the ones with the 4-5 year old quail they said the fertility was still strong but didn't lay every day.

I have a breeding group of 3 year olds. Out of the six hens I get 2-4 eggs most days.

Well my one male who had been calling was attacked by another pen mate. I don't think he is going to make it. We separated him and covered the wound with anti- pick. It's not pretty, back of his head and neck a mess. so I think I will try to get a emergency pen build tomorrow in case I need to move one more out. Dang it.

I had that happen today. It got bloody, but nothing critical. I fixed a critter trap into a temp cage to separate them. The wire is to wide for his feet so I just put a puppy training pad in there. AKA a pad that goes under the Human bedding. (I use the for the grand kids paint crafts) Will get him a small animal cage tomorrow. I don't like the wire bottoms. Keep us posted on how your boys do.
