Coturnix quail gender and other questions Plz help I don’t know what I am doing

You need to get more quail. They should be in groups of at least 5, they're social. A pen with a run would be good if it's predator-proof.
You've been told how to sex them. Go pick up the birds for yourself and look at them, or at least take close-up pics for us to see. They won't kill each other overnight, you don't need to panic about sexing them.

Try Googling "how to keep coturnix quail" or something along those lines. In future, don't get any animals without knowing how to care for them.

I am wondering if they need anything special like a roost or do I need to get a pen with a run right now they are in a cage in my shed
Coturnix won't roost. But you can make a loft with a sand box like this..

You can see the brown ramp they use to get up there.

If you add a run my quail love to hide in bushes. They have a few good sized tree limbs in there and some solid cover as well. They spend most of their time under cover during the day. They are most active in the late afternoon and I hear them talking to each other a lot around that time.

Don't forget some chick grit if you give them seeds. Also, my quail love greens. Mustard, kale, broccoli. Mealworms are a good addition too.

@CapricornFarm posted pics of her pens. While I raise my quail in an enclosed pen on the ground, I love the rabbit hutch idea. We will be making something similar to put in the garden for brooding outside.

Good luck! Let know how things go with your 4H project.

Thank you

Hi those are pretty birds.

You've probably found out by now that they waste a lot of food with those containers. The chick feeder one (with the holes) will be okay but will be better with a plant saucer under it to catch the spills, and you can put a couple of bricks under it so that they have to reach up to get food and don't kick it out so much. Chicken waterers are also good if they are raised off the floor so that they can't poop in it (they will).

The straw is fun for them, but you need a bigger enclosure. Straw will get soiled pretty quickly.

If they are young (the males not crowing yet and females not laying yet), you have some time to add additional females so that you have a better ratio. Ideally, each male will have a separate cage with a group of 4 or 5 females. I have one male who has only two females at the moment and they're okay, but it's better to let the males spread their attention around. Minimum 1 square foot per bird is the "rule," but the more space the happier they will be.

Once they are mature, it's harder to add more birds without upsetting them, so it's better to work on it while they are young. For now, I would separate the males and give them a hen each rather than put them together as you suggested. If there is going to be any fighting, it will likely be the males fighting each other.
