coturnix quail

I have a friend who gave me eggs, I hatched 22. Then she gave me more eggs, I hatched 31. Now I'm almost ready to process my first buch of males and I'm planning to have more eggs to hatch as soon as the pen is empty.

Of course all I have right now are normal brown and I want colors lots of colors.

i would start with eggs and hatch them yourself. here on BYC there are LOTS of people who practically give away coturnix eggs! u have had better luck hatching shipped coturnix eggs than any other eggs. first time 18 out of 20 eggs hatched, second 17 out of 17, and then 9 out of 10. i would say that's pretty good, eh? i've had terrible luck with other species. as low as nothing out of 2 dozen.

A&Ms are hard to tell the sex. i have a few and no clue. they are really great birds to raise, are vigorous and hardy and delicious! i prefer their eggs though, i really do. i could never kill and eat Batman, Fidget, Crash or Domino! they tame really well to the point that you can just pick them up and cuddle them like i do with batman!

i personally think the regular wild type (brown? pharaoh?) are the prettiest. batman has what looks like blue tips on some of his feathers! he is a darling. nearly flew away yesterday! i was holding him and he fluttered off. he landed at the end of the driveway and seemed really happy when i picked him up. he just sat there and let me. made all kinds of happy noises when i did and snuggled me a bit. they tame VERY well!

Our first quail were a gift from a friend. And what a great gift they turned out to be! They shipped from the west coast to east coast, and they forgot it was a holiday weekend so they were about 6 or 7 days in transit. About 50 eggs were sent and probably better than 1/2 hatched. I guess it was just ment to be!

I'm hoping for a 50% hatch when I buy eggs. Buying with that figure in mind. That would give me plenty to begin with. I've been searching and think I have the eggs. Bidding, so keep fingers crossed for me~! I'm addicted and don't even have them yet!~

I got my start from BYC'ers...Monarch23 has beautimous quail! Once you get started you cannot stop, it is an addiction beyond belief...and yes they tame down really well. Buttons now are a different story, they are pretty flighty.
