Coughing hen after bath

I am going to have to suggest that you do not buy that same bird or any from that person again.
Chicken diseases don't just go away/get cured. Symptoms may improve but the bird is usually a carrier for life.

Oh okay,
Thank you for the advice. That’s quite a bummer, but I don’t want my birds to get sick.

Hopefully your birds don't get sick but it's a little too late.
If she was on your property the other birds have been exposed.
:fl

I think you did the right thing by returning her.
The risk of her having a respiratory illness was too great. (it is possible if rough handling during bathing occurred the bird may have aspirated water)

I agree, that you should find another person to purchase from. If it turns out that this girl had a respiratory illness, even if the lady got her "well" (showing no symptoms) she can still be a carrier of the illness and pass it along.
We may sound like doomsday people here on the ER threads at times, some are very lucky and have no problems when purchasing older birds, but there are plenty of people that have gotten birds from various sources and wish they had never laid eyes on them. Quarantining and practicing bio-security between your existing flock and new birds is always a good idea, do some reading up on both those subjects to formulate a plan to help reduce the spread of illness when you find your new birds.

If it's a particular breed your are looking for, do your research and find a breeder, ask questions-hopefully they are honest or find a hatchery that carries a breed that you are interested in.

I have on occasion given a hen's behind a washing, but never a whole chicken:D People that show their birds do give them a thorough washing, but I would question why this lady bathed the hen before she brought her to you. It could be all innocent, but being one who questions everything, I can come up with plenty of nefarious reasons too:hmm
Just my 2¢

Good luck in your search and I hope all goes well for you.
