Hello.

I am a new member and have read quite a bit about this issue, but I am needing some advice! I have a pretty large backyard flock of around 40 chickens of a variety of breeds. A few months ago, they started sneezing/coughing and I went the natural route and started VetRx. My chickens have a very nice dry/warm and draft free barn they stay in at night and out foraging all day and have NOT introduced any new chickens. All the chickens I have were either hatched at my place or purchased as babies over a year ago.

I have had a few of my chickens die but within weeks of each other. It seems to have hit certain breeds harder than others. Most of the chickens that have died were Marans. I have done 2 treatments of soluble Tylan and the coughing still persists. My vet knows very little about chickens but always good about getting me Tylan when I needed it. Any ideas on what could be going on or how to treat it?

Thank you!

What doses have you been giving?
Vetrx is not a medicine, it's like vicks rub for birds.
You can send a bird in for necropsy at a state lab BUT if it's bird flu, they'll like come and cull your birds.

Welcome To BYC

Your birds have been exhibiting symptoms for a few months? So this is ongoing.
Do they improve with Tylan or it makes no difference?

If you've given 2 rounds of Tylan and coughing is still an issue, you'd want to consider that you are dealing with a Virus which won't respond to antibiotics or it's something environmental that is contributing to the symptoms. Is housing extra dusty, do you have plenty of ventilation, do you use hay that has molded, is there a strong odor of ammonia from droppings where the chickens roost?

If you lose another, it would be a very good idea to have some testing done to find out exactly what is causing the symptoms. If the cause is respiratory disease, then you'll have a name and more information to be able to treat/give the correct type of medications if any is available.
You can look up your State Lab here:
