I recently hatched 4 healthy chicks. 2 hatched day 20 (saturday) and 2 hatched day 21 (sunday). Today is day 22 and the 5th and final egg pipped around 10am. I patiently waited all day. Only saw a little progress. (See first photo).
About 30 minutes ago I went to check on the egg and didn't see any movement. Usually I would see small movements throughout the day. I got worried and took the egg out. Still no movement. It looked as though he started to zip but only the shell chipped away and there was still the thin part of the egg. I carefully peeled apart the shell and tried to save him but he was already dead :(. At first I felt really bad because I feel like I should have helped him sooner. But when looking closer, his head was all bloody and seemed open, as if it didn't fully develop. I posted a photo. Just wondering if there was anything I could of done. Or if this was maybe a deformity and he wouldn't have survived anyway.

SO true. In our first (and so far, only) hatch, we had one that pipped and was chirping on Day 20. Six of its hatchmates hatched with no problem on Days 20 and 21. We put them in the brooder and waited for this chick to hatch but it didn't. It kept chirping, though. On Day 22 I helped it a little, but it still didn't zip. On Day 24 we finally destroyed it. My feeling is if it can't hatch on its own it probably won't survive.
