When I was a newbie last year, I was seeking the exact same thing. However, there are a TON of different opinions. There is no "one size fits all" method to having chickens.
Just like life itself, everyone has their own way of doing things, and many, many ways can be equally successful in raising chicks.
So, with all that in mind, here is my advice:
1. You're already on BYC, so that's step 1. READ as much as you can on here. Look through old posts. It will give you the basics AND an idea of where opinions differ. I also recommend Storey's Guide.
2. Stick to the basics. Food, water, heat, enough space for everyone.
3. Live and learn. Find the things that work for you (supplements, treats, free-ranging vs caged vs penned etc etc. Yes, you might make mistakes but few of them are fatal to either you or your birds.
4. Remember, it's supposed to be FUN!
Good luck!
