When I was a newbie last year, I was seeking the exact same thing. However, there are a TON of different opinions. There is no "one size fits all" method to having chickens.
Just like life itself, everyone has their own way of doing things, and many, many ways can be equally successful in raising chicks.
So, with all that in mind, here is my advice:
1. You're already on BYC, so that's step 1. READ as much as you can on here. Look through old posts. It will give you the basics AND an idea of where opinions differ. I also recommend Storey's Guide.
2. Stick to the basics. Food, water, heat, enough space for everyone.
3. Live and learn. Find the things that work for you (supplements, treats, free-ranging vs caged vs penned etc etc. Yes, you might make mistakes but few of them are fatal to either you or your birds.
My mother and I had been chick illiterate. We had no clue what we had gotten outselves into once we got our chicks last satuday (They's tolerated us a week! Horray!) Well, I can tell you that this website has helped us a ton!
Anyway. We have a chicken book. Durring my free time in school I read it so I learn more about our chicks. <3
We got some great advice from these two books. "Living with Chickens: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Backyard Flock" by Jay Rossier. And our other book. "How To Raise Chickens: Everything You Need To Know About Raising Chickens" by Christine Heinrichs
One thing to always remember is that chicks are skiddish! They may not warm up to you right whne you bring them home or try to pick them up for the first time. Give them time to warm up to you and you'll be raising friendly chickens! :3
