My flock has been battling what I thought was a RI ...feed store gave me antibiotics...sorta kinda helped, not really...went back after the 2 weeks told the guy they still seemed to be having some probs...he said oh they probably just have a cold...my Dad was the manager of a huge chicken farm here in Idaho from the time I was a child until he retired...he said, 'theyre fine, theyre shiny, theyre still laying...theyre not sick.' Long story short, this was back in April...off and on they would have the respiratory thing going on sneezing, wheezing, shaking heads...I kept reading reading reading and stumbled upon something yesterday about GAPEWORM and it talked about the shaking head thing. Lightbulb went off...the site hit everything on the head with the symptoms my chickens were having, what I had seen twice was what I thought was a little bloody mucous thing. THAT was an actual gapeworm, theyre red and kind of in a stringy y shape when theyre coughed up...I have a total of 20 chickens including 5 babies..3 of them are 7 weeks old and the other two are 4 weeks old. 2 of the hens are really symptomatic, 1 is the Buff Orpington (which surprises me bcuz she's the biggest in the flock and the other a White Rock. One of my hens is actually sitting on eggs! I am SO MAD bcuz I bought 11 of them from a person I didnt know and that's what started this whole rodeo. I'd like to, well never mind you can probably guess what I'd like to do to THAT lady. I shouldnt have bought them just bcuz of the filthy condition of the place I bought them from. Take note, don't let it happen to you! I have done alot of research on wormers and there's one called Flubenvet 1% that sounds like the ideal wormer...and there is no withdrawal time for the eggs. Has anyone used this? I cant find a feedstore around here that carries it, probably have to order it online. In the meantime I've put them on a homeopathic warmer that Homeopet makes that is called WRM Clear. This is what the label claims "WRM CLEAR is a Homeopathic remedy formulated for removal of Hook, Round an d Tapeworms. For prevention by reducing susceptibility to infestations. May also aid in recovery from worm effects and detoxify from effects of conventional products. 100% natural, no chemicals added, no food withdrawal". It is liquid form and you give it to them directly or in the water. I gave the two that are affected the most drops in their mouth and then put drops in the water for the whole flock. I have always kept a really clean coop and dispose of the poop in their run everyday..and use bleach and soap in their waterers daily when cleaning, probably why it hasnt completely got ahold of them. Now I'm freaking out because everything I'm reading says Gapeworms are as hard as tapeworms to get rid of. Any input from any of you would be great!
Tractor supply and most feed stores will carrry safeguard goat wormer. Thats the only product that will not have to be ordered online that will work on gape worm. Use half cc orally
