Countdown to receiving new chicks on oct 9th week

So the girls got their first playtime with my entire family. My son LOVED this. Over the weekend we built a ten panel playpen in the house with a tarp and paper on the ground, we put all the chicks inside. My son wouldn't stop talking to them and laughing at their antics. We gave them a chunk of dirt from the ground with clover and weeds .they dug in and went nuts scratching and playing. I then cut up four grapes and my soma do fed them by hand...it was awesome ..and the chicken snatch and run was amusing. The barred rock kept flying up and letting me pick her up and play with her. We also carved a pumpkin and did the playpen thing with them today...this time they got pumpkin and grass...still fun...my son hates when they have to go back :) .

So have you guys ever seen chicks dust bathe? Is it too early for that behavior? If so ...one of my little ones is special...

Hope everyone had an awesome weekend :)

How wonderful!! My chicks have been spending lots of time in their tractor outside having a blast, and bakc in at night to their brooder. I dont think it wil be long before they can spend the night out there.
Dust bathing is one of those things they instinctively know how to do. I put a shoe box half full of lose dry dirt in their brooder at 2 weeks. They also love it when they can catch a beam of sunlight and they will lie down on their side and slip their wing out soaking up that warm sun

I swear my husband and I looked at each other like we both thought the bird was having a seizure or something...she got herself down into the loose dirt and was rubbing her sides and tummy all in it. My husbands a neat freak and was like don't get dirty little one! It amused me but at first scared me because I had assumed that behavior would be for adult birds. Their roosting tendency also makes me smile. I walk by and one lucky bird is sleeping up top on the ecoglow. Which by the way I raised up this weekend as my hubby thinks they are getting hurt by squishing under it (doesn't matter what I say). Also there was a family protest when I brought up that this week has been two weeks and that the girls should be moving downstairs, for now they get a pass and get to stay upstairs. Everyone is surprisingly happy with them.

I am glad you all are having a good time with them, I get excited every time I get birds. They just love the dirt dont they? Try putting a shoe box of dirt in there for them, it willl keep them entertained so they dont start picking on each other. Mine bathe in it and scratch around in it all day. All the things that adult chickens do these guys will do, it is so cute to see them do things like roost and begin to sort out the pecking order. It sounds like you are doing anamazing job being a chickiemommy lol. We need to get new pics up.

Urge...having the worst week ...I will get new pics up soon. My BR chick is becoming my favorite I think....it comes running out to see me...climbed into my hand today...so sweet...I've got four or five shy girls who really don't like to be handled and then the rest are like fine if you must touch me. The red and BR are the most outgoing. The two Easter eggers next especially if I have a treat.

Lol yea there will always be the ones that are stand offish and that is normal and will change with age. I love that they look up at you when they hear you. My Langshans and brahmas are the friendliest right now, they will fly up out of the brooder when they see me lol, time to get a cover on it.

My husband noticed that they flock to the side I am at during playtime but I just figured it was because he is scarier :D. But when they started flying up I had to notice. Today was cute because they tried to march around the house while I was cleaning their home out. I had put them in a large dog crate while I cleaned and the door swung open and out they marched one by one...would have been a great picture.
