I'm not sure that this was the right place to put this...'showing'...

I've seen eggs at our county fair, and there are several divisions (brown, white, bantam, green, etc.). But what are they judged on? Uniformity in color, size and shape? Taste? Freshness? I can't remember if I saw any broken or missing from the cartons, so maybe they don't look at the inside???

Has anyone shown their eggs at a fair before?

Eggs are judged in "different" catagories. They judge them on shape( only if completly deformed), Make sure minimum of calcium deposits on shells, cleaness,. Then they judge freshness of the egg. By candling and cracking open to examine insides, to determine AA A B or inedible.

They should look as similar as possible, egg-shaped, well....like a perfect egg.

ETA: I think less speckles, too.

Thanks, this was helpful. I want to enter eggs this summer.

Also, do they prefer darker brown or lighter brown in the normal brown range? (not Marans dark) Or is this based on a judge's personal preference?

My son entered our eggs at the County Fair years ago. They were suprised, only had 4H members before entering eggs. He wound up taking first place too! They were looking for uniformity in color, size and shape.
While working on his Gardening Merit Badge he entered his Butternut Squash, took second place!

Okay so I'm really curious on this, because I'm thinking of entering eggs to our county fair. . . What about Marans eggs? Because our categories include brown, white, and blue/green. What of dark brown? And, if they judge on shape, etc - What about Polish eggs? They should naturally be quite pointed, so I hope they also judge the eggs on the shape they should be based on breed. . . ?
