I frequently have half a can of canned sliced mushrooms left over because half of our family doesnt like mushrooms...When I make a recipe using them...I use them sparingly. Can I feed the remaining ones to the hens? Since they are canned does the sodium content make a difference?

Also...what about flavored yogurt? It seems as though I always have one or two expired yogurts in the fridge...sometimes strawberry sometimes cherry...and sometimes sweetened with artificial sweeteners(the low fat ones)

And finally....what about the half eaten bowls of cereal that my kids leave on the counter every other morning before school? We use skim milk and the cereal would range from Captain Crunch to Raisin Bran to Cookie Crisp....any cereals we should NOT feed?

I dont want to view my chickens as garbage disposals:sick but anything we can eliminate from being wasted appeals to me:)

I'm sure you will get some great advice about this. If it were me personally I would not give them the sugared cereals. Mine do love flavored yogurts! They especially like the blueberry or honey.

Although I get the organic.

I was given two big boxes of sliced mushrooms. one went bad while I was canning the other.
I came here and asked the same question. The answer came back that there is nothing wrong with feeding them the mushrooms, but they probably would not eat them.

They did not eat them.

I had to rake out a bushel of slimy mushrooms.
freeze those mushrooms and use them later for people food. Your chickens are like the other half of your family. they will just eat around them.
