Covering a run................

Most of the asian and mediteranian breeds can fly longer and higher distances.I have seen Ameraucana's fly 10 ft high and my mille fluer hen will fly from the run door 30 feet to the maple tree.

If I remember correctly, it is in the ground 2' and app. 8' up. We were lucky to have the Barn wall there, we cut strips from 2"x4"s , and used staples to attach that side to the Barn. Don P.S. No the wind has not bothered it yet, it has been up for about a year!

this is available at Lowes and costs $7.16 per pack. We will buy 2 packs and join them together with cable ties (thanks Don for the idea) then have a long section of frame we will put in the ground to support it up, and this also has a cross-section which they will be able to fly up on to and perch.

Pictures will follow when we are done.......

We used to free range, but we had too many predator problems - mostly the neighbor dogs and cats killing our chickens. So, we put up a 6' fence, and then raised an area in the middle and put fencing over that. (We need to be able to walk around inside.) We were able to use some old fencing, so cost wasn't the issue. Any type of netting would not be strong enough to keep out the raccoons. We have had a few birds that would climb the fence after we clipped one wing so they couldn't fly. They would grab the fencing with their beaks and use their beaks and feet to climb. Dual purpose birds can't fly very high, but I don't think it would be practical to build a fence too high for them to fly over as you would have to go at least 8' for that.

Our chickies...their wings aren't clipped, and when they're riled up, I've seen them exceed 8 feet. Probably no problem if you keep their wings clipped, though.

That is so funny to picture them climbing. It's like a parrot in a cage. You should post a video of the chicken breakout attempts.
