covering the run with plastic to keep snow out is 4 mil ok to use

there wont be any plastic on the roof . the roof is metal and i havent had it collapse the last 3 winters. i have 2x4 braces under the roof and 4, 3x12 sheets of metal roofing fastened to that. as long as i shovel the roof off when i get a good snow storm i havent had it collpse yet. the plastic will just be for the sides to keep the snow from blowing in . my run is like a 12x12 square with chicken wire wrapped around the 6ft fence posts and i built aroof over the top of it with 2x4 bracing and flat boards on top of the 2x4s and then the metal roof lays on the flat boards. it has workedout fine the last 3 years. just figured i would wrap the sides this year to keep the snow out and i wouldnt have to shovel it out. i figure a good wrapping of plastic and some strapping to keep the plastic fastened to the sides of the run should do the trick.

We are in the mountains of NC where it's very cold and windy. I covered two sides of our run with 4 ml. plastic in September and have already had to take it off because the wind ripped it to pieces. May have been because I put it up with staples. I used a tarp over the roof before we covered it and that held up better in the wind.

Pat, here on BYC, suggested I cover the sides with burlap. She said it would block the wind and rain. So, I've done that by stapling to the wood and using twist ties to attach it also to the hardware cloth. We just had a rain storm that dumped 5+ inches in under 24 hrs. and also had very high winds. There was a breeze in the run but NO wind. The rain also did not blow in throught the burlap. Burlap does not flap and make noise. I'm very pleased! I left the tunnel covered in plastic.

Burlap is a heavy, strong cloth made of jute, flax, or hemp fibers and used to make bags or cover root balls of dug plants. It can be purchased in rolls or squares. We had some squares so that's what I used.
