coyote in the driveway!!

I would like to know about this too. We are about to possibly move to a rural area that has coyotes. I want to get chickens then, but not if they will draw coyotes and endanger my kids. (They are 9, 7, 6, 3, and 1.) And we don't have a dog. Yikes!

i live down here in Elizabeth Colorado and i shoot the coyotes with a .22 long range rifle and high velocity hollow point rounds


1 shot 1 kill !!!! Thats what i always aim for when they get to close for comfort

Please watch your children closely. They will stalk a smaller child and attack them. I just saw a show on this last night. Scary stuff. The bear is even scarier..............

Sorry, but coyotes typically prey on small mammals, rodents, reptiles, and the occasional small dog or cat. (Chicken if they can get to it easily.) Trash is ok, and they even eat fruits and vegs.

They don't really hunt in packs like wolves, but more often solitary. They are opportunistic animals, taking what is easiest, that takes least amount energy expenditure. If it's difficult they move on. (So a predator proof coop will deter them.)

They are usually shy and retiring, so the fact that it was lounging in your driveway is worrisome because that's pretty bold. Such behavior would make me worry about rabies... I'd be careful because of that, not because it would take my toddler.

We have several that patrol our home. I heard one last night in the brush, probably 50 ft away. I'm certain they've check our coop more than once, but they can't get in!

"Usually" is the operative word. The coyotes out here by me are taking down calves by hunting in packs. They will work together to entice a dog to an area where there are several others waiting to kill it. Coyotes are VERY adaptable and are losing their hunting areas to development. They will breed with domestic dogs (called coydogs). Fortunately the coyotes just travel through my property, my IWs have threatened them enough so they don't hang around for very long.

We had a farmer with lambs that was losing them to packs of coyotes. We have seen them during the day several times. But then when you live in the country or anywhere you have to watch your back so to speak.
