Coyote or Fisher?

It kina depends on the individual fox greys are more fruitatarians then meat eaters and when they do eat meat they eat a fair amount of mice rats, muskrat is getting kina big for them that and bunnies

My Loki runs in the goat field only. I do not have a fenced yard around my coops or he would be in there. If I let him run he would more than likely go after it and get hit on the 4lane highway at the edge of our property like his brother did while chasing a fox. I certainly do not want to lose him to a predator too. They used to work so well together one stayed with the herd while the other patrolled, it was cool to watch them. Now I only have Loki and it might sound bad but he is more important to me than meat chickens or ducks.

I am considering expanding the goat field around the chicken coops too so he can protect them. Right now all my chickens and ducks are either in the barn or locked in good solid coops.

I put four bantams in a strong cage inside the now empty dog/duck house and placed a baited live trap in the doorway. I also have the night camera set up. (I think I did it right) Loki is barking now I hope he doesn't scare it off this time.

We have been here 6 years with free ranged poultry and have never lost more than 4-5 birds the whole time to predators. It has mostly been hawks until now.

Funny I am not afraid of a coyote, fox, or coon but I have never seen a fisher and will probably flip out if that is what it is. I do not own a gun but my brother in law is a hunter and he is now "on call"

Thank God for us hunters - people don't realize the good we do by keeping certain animals in check - we would be overrun with animals - I live in the country and the deer eat everything that isn't fenced in - the same with predators - their roaming all over the place at night - I put up a trail camera last fall to see the movement of deer - I couldn't believe all the animals that were walking through my yard at night - cats, skunks, fox, deer, bear, coyote, opposson, bobcats - never see most of these animals in the day time -

I would appreciate the "hunters" around here more if they focused on the varmint species instead of just how big of a buck they can get at deer season. I think most of them are too lazy. We are overrun with foxes, now coyote too. Excpet for the one shot during deer season I have only heard of two being shot. The other I saw was dead beside the road.

Well no luck last night the only picture I got was of a stray cat. I didn't catch him though. He must have heard about what happened to the last stray I cought.

It must have a full belly after taking the Pekin and guines two days apart. I guess it could have been the storm too.

Maybe I will have better luck tonight.

OHBigmamma,

Most hunters are looking for meat for the table, so certain predators wouldn't be targets at all.

In some states you need multiple licenses to to take animals so the cost to come up empty handed can be high.

In some states except for predation control by a landowner it is illegal to hunt a lot of fur bearers and one needs a trappers license and all that entails, in some states it is illegal to trap on the lands of another without following all kinds of additional requirements.

Best deal going on the predator control is to tend to your property and encourage others to do likewise.

SO I just sweetened the pot tonight as far as the bait goes. I had some eggs that didn't hatch but had chicks in them so I am going to break them open and leave them out for the wonderful smell. The stupid banties I used last night now want to sleep in the old duck house so I am going to pen them back in there too.

I was talking to the farmer tha lives a road over and he said he has seen three coyotes running together this spring. I wonder if that is odd for them to be in a pack like that. I figured it is a mom and her cubs. I still haven't heard from the game warden so I am going to buy some soft jaw traps to set. My brother inlaw is going to sit out this weekend and try get it for me. I am just going to keep feeding them eggs until then, hopefully that keeps it from trying to get in the barn.

I also ran 3 strands of electric wire around all my outdoor coops. I put a Bulldozer charger on it. If I can't catch it I sure can shock the pee out of it!

I learned to make wolfskin moccasin boots a long time ago. This winter I will be wearing a pair of coyote ones!!

If your going after a martin or fisher, look at your fighting a cross between a chainsaw and a squirrel. They are vicious and determined. Trapping is probably the best way to get them, look up a old school magazine called FUR FISH & GAME. they have forgotten more about trapping fisher than we can ever hope to learn. Good luck

Thank you Brian. I am going to be cautious no matter what it is, I can't believe coyotes are coming within 20 feet of my house.

Like I said I am not afraid of coyote or fox but I think a fisher would be a different story. So they are also called Martins? I had never even heard about one until my neighbor was describing it to me. HE kepot calling it a "KingFisher" which I knew was a bird so I really had no ides what he was talking about until recently.

Fishers and Pine Martens (American Marten) are two different animals. Fishers are much larger. It is possible that fishers and martens are in your area but not very likely.

This website has some good basic information.

This website is also very useful but is more scientific and not quite as easy for novices to use.

I don't know if the second link will work, you might have to do a search.
