I miss him so much he was such a sweet boy, one of my nicest roosters. Well I'm worried they will come back. I don't wanna lose another one. I have a Labrador, he scares them off, he didn't see this one, (Marly's my lab) I'm sure Marly would have done something if he knew. But what if he doesn't notice, I cant put my chickens lives one him. Please reply before I lose another one please reply asap. I LOVE my chickens they are my family, my best friends so please, please help. Shooting a coyote is definently not an option I would never hurt an animal, I have secure coops my chickens are free - range. I have 19 chickens (I should have 20

This was Goose as a chick:

It's not the best picture but.... He was only 3 -4 months old when tonight when he was eaten. I miss him.

If you wouldn't shoot a coyote who has killed & ate your chicken then I would suggest you get someone who is willing to protect your flock and do it. You can't trap coyotes with any amount of success, they are sneaky. They will return for another meal. Maybe, the chickens need a secure run instead of free ranging. The coyotes are still there. They will come back, so you need to be proactive instead of letting the coyotes kill other chickens.

Chick charm is right. The coyote WILL be back. Again and again. You could try to pen them and give up free ranging, but once an opportunist like a coyote discovers a place of easy pickings... more losses are inevitable. I know you don't want an animal to die... but what about the lives of your birds that coyote will claim?

Terribly heartbreaking.. And I am so very sorry you lost your sweet rooster!

..but Chick Charm and bugglesmommy are both right. The coyote now knows where delicious chicken lives. He will keep coming back until there are no chickens left, or he is dead. Predators are just like that.

when you free range, it is a given, that you will lose birds to predators unless you have livestock guardian dogs escorting them. It's one or the other - build them a fort knox of a secure covered run with 1/2" hardware cloth (not chicken wire) or electric fencing around the coop and run or exterminate coyotes as they come. If you get rid of one, surely another will take his place. You can be sure they will kill your livestock in horrible ways. The coyote has to go permanently.

Well I really cant not free - range, when my 2 roosters are stuck in the coop too long they fight. I may be able to get another dog that would guard them. 2 guard dogs may be an option. I am seeing coyotes are really some pests (if you have chickens anyway). I usually let my flocks out at 7:30 today I'll let them out at 8:00 just to be sure he's gone. I'm also keeping my dog outside with the chickens today so he can guard the flock. If anyone knows of any dog breeds that like chickens but hate coyotes and other animals like that let me know. I was thinking maybe an Australian Shepard or a Border Collie would be good. I don't want to lose anymore chickens. Luckily only 1 coyote came (hopefully he has no pack to bring today). I am also going out of town in 2 weeks. I have someone with no chicken experience coming to watch them, I hope they'll be ok. If anyone has any ideas on ways they could keep free - ranging, or if another chicken guard dog would help please reply. I really appreciate it.
Thanks

Your best option is to wait for the coyote to come back and shoot it. Sorry but eventually every chicken owner will need to kill one their chickens due to injury or illness etc instead of letting them suffer needlessly. Its life. My flocks free range on 8 acres but i have 3 border collies that have been trained to not see them as easy pickins. Just because they are herding dogs doesn't mean they won't need to be trained to see what is their "flock" to protect and what is foe. I have heard of many people who have had border collies or other guard dogs that have killed their chickens instead of guarding them. You could also contact your department of conservation and see if they can provide you with a live trap to put and relocate the animal. When predators are seen around here fox, raccoons, coyotes, ferel cats etc they are disposed of. Once they find easy meals they will come back til everyone is gone.

Well I was at this market to get Fruits and vegetables and I told her about Goose. She said she knew what to do. She said lock them in their coop at 4:00 for 2 weeks and let them out at 8:15 for 2 weeks. So I'll try it. She watches live stock animals so she said she'd help the other lady take care of them. So do u think this will work? I didn't lose any chickens today, I didn't let them out 'till 8:30 and I locked them up at 4:00, so it worked today =) Will it continue to work?
Thanks sooooo much!

Great Pyrenees and maremma are two dog breeds that many people here on BYC use as guardian dogs for their flocks. Have you considered an electric fence or electric poultry netting? You may need to thin out your roosters because a good ratio is 1 rooster for 10-12 hens. Just as a precaution, I would probably keep them cooped up for a week or two, and put the roosters in a separate bachelor pen together.
