Coyote problem, need ideas

I have a coyote or coyte's that will just not quit! I have lined part of my 5 acres with cholla thick and deep along the outside of the fence, lined more of it in chicken wire and did one stretch in hot wire. They are digging under the hot wire part. I tried moving it down lower and they are just digging deeper. I no longer let the chickens out unless I am home. Today in broad daylight a coyote came in the yard up onto my back porch and took the absolutely beautiful 7/8 English Orpington that was given to me. I was in love with that rooster! When I ran outside to try to get him to drop my rooster he didn't even bother to pick up his pace. I have placed chicken wire about 2 inches deep and 2+ feet out around my one coop that has a dirt floor and they are digging into it at night. In the last few months I have lost 1 Golden Laced Cochin, my beloved banty Barred Rock "Lucky" 2 buff Orp pullets and now my Blue Orpington rooster. At this point it doesn't matter if I keep them locked up or not, they are still getting them. I am getting scared to let the pug out to potty, I now go with him every time. It seems they are pretty bold coming in the daytime and right up to the house with people in the house. The glass slider was open so I heard when he took Jacob. That coyote was only about 5 feet away from me with only a screen between us. Any idea's. i don't usually consider poison as it is not a clean death, but am seriously considering chumming at this point.

WOAH! never heard of a coyote like that! Sorry about your birds. Where I live if a coyote was that gutsy I`d blast his butt away with my .357! Ive killed many foxes and raccoons and a coyote. But its not always that easy with location. Also you may not prefer to hunt, own guns, or shoot things. And that's okay I respect that. Poison can be dangerous because your hens may get it. What you need to do is take sheet metal or plywood about two feet wide and line the outside of your coop with it. Making sort of a wall that he cannot get through. Then bury wire about a foot deep (strait down) and have some going about a foot strait out (along the ground). Coyotes are a pain because they`re VERY hard to trap. You wont get them into a regular trap. Pretty sure they sell special traps though. Coyotes are very smart, stubborn, and gutsy. Maybe call a local trapper or pest guy. Sorry your having to deal with one like that. Its crushing to watch one of your favorite birds get killed. I watched a hawk carry off one of my best hens.

How to Make a Snare -

If they are using a regular spot to get in the pasture try the above. Or 12ga shotgun with dead coyote heavy shot or buckshot or a good 22 dependent on your surroundings. Shotgun would have been good for the one leaving the porch.

Id use 12 gauge double buck. Easy hit and certain death. Not a huge risk of collateral

Collateral is what I am worried about. I have a .45 black powder and a .22 rifle. The thing is he is so fast, by the time I grab a gun he's gone or I never hear him in the first place. I know he was outside when I was because I had just walked back in from the back porch not 5 minutes earlier. I was cooking dinner and tossed some scraps out for the chickens. Since they hang on the back porch I figured I was o.k for a few minutes because I could hear and see my little fluffies. I am going to try to track him in the morning. Every time I finish one section of the fence he/she just moves further down the fence and digs in again. Coyote proofing 5 acres and 2 coops is going to get expensive. I am thinking of calling F&G to see if they can help. After reading their site he is a nuisance and is also considered a yellow alert, which means they should take action at no cost to me. I just wish it would pick off my hatchery stock B.O's. I can hatch them all day long with no problems. Apparently he likes the pretty birds.

I think this is the same one I posted about awhile back. He was on the road that runs along my fence and didn't even want to move for the car. Definitely has no fear of humans, which makes him dangerous. I believe it is illegal in Ca. to use poison for coyotes unless you are a licensed pest control person.

Your better off using the .22

Hang some bacon on that hot wire, the yote is able to dig under the fence because it's fur is keeping it from getting shocked, but once it grabs that bacon, ZAP
Just remeber if you can not get a sure shot don't take it, wait till you know you got him dead in your sites cause if you miss he will be harder to get a shot on next time.

Your better off using the .22

Really? A .22? Reason I ask is, I have a coyote problem AND a .22, but didn't think I could take one out with such a small caliber!? Good for opossums, though... What ammo do you use?

I have CB Long and mini mags. Good for plinking cans! I called the F& G Dept today, waiting for them to call back. It was here last night, I have footprints all over the place. My problem with shooting is he is going to have to be real close. I can't risk a distance shot as there are houses and a road on all 4 sides of me. Granted they are 3-10 acres away, but I don't want to risk hitting a house, person, pet or car! I am off to do a little tracking to see if I can find where it is stopping to eat. They tend to keep to set routes unless something changes. Maybe I can shake him up a little.
