I have lost three birds in two months. The first was a rouen hen. The last two (a runner hen and a pekin drake) were taken in a little over a week and a half. I don't know what's going on. I'm thinking it's a coyote because there are no feathers or anything around where they are. I let them free range during the day because they don't have a run, just a pen. It seems like whatever it is is striking earlier and earlier. We've been penning them at night but before dusk. My pekin drake was nabbed tonight. It's got to be something larger because he's not little. Any ideas on what it is? My DF is thinking about putting a duck decoy out by their pen to see if he can see what's taking them. I hate this!! I've tried to pen them earlier but they get ticked and refuse to go in.

With a coon there should be more feathers present as they would have to subdue something as large as a Pekin.

My guess would be either Fox, Coyote or Bobcat.

These or a dog. And I question whether a fox could take something as large as a Pekin without any sort of struggle. But Coyote or Bobcat certainly could. This happens to me from time to time. When it does, birds aren't allowed free range for a couple of days, but penned in a run. Then we bait a trap in the evening and DH and sons wait in a blind with a gun.

We're thinkngi coyote. Our pen is small. There really isn't enough room to make them stay in there all day. I'm just going to have to get them penned up early, which they are going to be very upset about. It does always seem that it's my favorite ones that get eaten. I'm suprised that whatever it is got my runner girl. She's quick!
