We have a crab apple tree that is loaded with fruit. Are they okay for chickens to eat? Feed them whole or grind them up in a mash?

It's OK to feed them crab apples. They may peck at them whole or you can cut up/mash whatever works for you and the chickens. Just not too much they are a treat.
Apple seeds contain trace amounts of cyanogenic compounds(related to cyanide) If that worries you don't give them the seeds, lots of people do not worry about it.

Imp-My next door neighbor tosses apples into my yard for the chickens (He asked first) Only problem is he'll toss 20 apples for 4 hens. Lol!
