Cracked egg with chick developing??

Keep us updated! I didn't realize I popped a cracked egg into my incubator, but I now have a lil quail developing. So I can't wait to see how yours does!!

Aww will do! I really hope yours makes it. I’ve only hatched quail eggs, this is my first time with chickens. What kind of quail are you hatching?

I'd also like to see if this little one hatches! I just chose to discard one that got pecked (I think by another hen, not the broody) that otherwise looked alive and normal at day 7. I decided the crack was too big for it to survive and it wasn't clean enough in the nest for wax to help. It was kind of a bummer. So I would like to see a success story.

Oh, I’m sorry to hear about your egg getting pecked. Nice that you have a broody hen though! I’m raising up a silkie pullet so I can use her to incubate in the future, instead of the incubator.

If I had noticed how bad the crack was on this one I probably wouldn’t have set it in the first place, but I’m in with it now. fingers crossed! I hope the rest of your eggs hatch successfully.

Tomorrow’s day 21! I meant to update this before, right after the original post I used wax from an unscented tea candle to seal in the crack, which was around the entire egg. I candled it right before lockdown and the chick inside was definitely moving and looked to be around the right size. Thank you for that advice! I wouldn’t have thought of it.

When I took it out of the egg turner though, a chunk of the outer shell stuck to the plastic. It was really hard to get it out. it’s a little giant incubator/egg turner. Next time I’ll try to put a paper towel or something in between the wax and the turner. Hopefully the missing shell won’t be an issue- the membrane is still in tact and right now it’s the most wiggly egg at lockdown. (Top right of photo 2).

Can’t wait to see if this little one hatches.

It maybe wise to put some coconut oil on the exposed membrane ... Preventing shrink wrap.

Good idea! I’ll try it, but do you think it could make the humidity too high? I’m in the tropics (Hawaii) and did a dry hatch which read at 45-50 percent, then added water at lockdown and regretted it. I’m worried it’s already too humid. It’s reading at 70 percent but so much condensation on the glass…

Will coconut oil make a difference if my humidity is already on the high side?

There’s some serious chirping coming from these eggs btw

Hope the egg goes well, as for the candling, i have learned from experience that eggs on day seven or more if they do not have an air sac whether they smell or not they end up exploding.

I live on the BI ... very wet today.
I don't think the CO will make much difference, even if you're doing a dry hatch, once lockdown I've read that the humidity should be 70% ... So I understand your concern. Lets get some that may know more ....

My last batch I kept humidity between 30 - 40% the first 18 days. I used a Little Giant just like yours for lock down. I put a little water in each compartment and the humidity went to 80% plus the last 3 days. I didn't want to fiddle with it too much so I just left it. They all hatched just fine. Not saying that is the proper way or your 70% is good, just saying mine did ok with it that high.
