We are lucky to have an Amish family that butchers for us (for pay of course). Each kid gets a bird to pluck and they are done in no time. I was not allowed to get ANY chickens until these arrangements were made, as the DH did not want to have anyone butchering birds on the property. (attracts coyotes and other varmits like the local bear).

I'm glad this is working out for you.

Now if I can just find homes for the excess pullets we raise...You have to start so many chicks to get a few decent show birds...I hate having to eat working girls.

I'm one of those people that routinely gives away extra roosters. The last lady that took 11 roosters from me will be getting an email in another month or so for my 10+ large fowl younguns that should be just getting to fryer size by then. If she doesn't want them, off to craigslist they will go. Prior to her I gave 2 or 3 batches to one guy, and prior to him gave a very large batch to a different guy.

It may be a waste of money for me, but for people who can't butcher their own and can't find anyone to do it for them, it makes hatching and "straight run" possible.

really? you have troubles giving your pullets away?

I would guess she is not giving them away.......which makes sense. People can buy them or they can become food. No sense giving away a good meal if you have someone to butcher it.

We live in an area where everyone wants to start with chicks. Everyone believes a Ready-to-Lay Pullet is really an old hen that won't lay anymore. And I'd rather SELL pullets than give them away. I can always put them in the laying flock and sell eggs, but I'd rather keep fewer but better chickens.

it seems that where i live more people are interested in POL birds than day olds, that's why i was wondering... you can get some good money ($20) for POL pullets around here, depending on how they were started

Hey Booker,

Was wondering how many roos you have gotten for free in total?

I am wondering about doing this, but it really would have to be (for us) a one pick up, and a one time slaughter. We don't have a place to put roos and Hubby wouldn't want to do a few here, a few there. It might be worth it. Times are rough for us a bit now, and chicken can be so expensive! Why not help someone reduce their feed bill and also help reduce mine?

Just wanted to see how sucessful you've been. Have you tried for any excess turkeys/ducks/geese etc? Or just Roos?

I tried putting my lil roo on craigs list - I even offered to deliver him in local area just to get rid of him - all I got from that was pornographic calls

So I grew a pair and processed him myself - but it was hard to do - he was the first one I had and I had named him
