My aunt who is 76 decided this spring she wanted some laying hens after 15 years. (her husband died last fall and I think she is trying to occupy her time).
She has a perfect coop and just let's them free range. Well she wanted to start with baby chicks and orderedfrom hatchery with a minimum of 25. Well she did this before I knew it and ordered straight run and of course she has about 14 roosters.
Well she only wants one and can't bring herself to send them to freezer camp, she turned them all into big pets and can't bring herself to cull them herself. I don't want them and I don't really want the birds for meat either and she said if I did it she still couldn't eat. Honestly I don't understand they had chickens for years and always butchered and ate their culls but I guess it's different now, she made pets of them.
Anyway, I know people have posted ads on craigslist to get rid of extra roos. Has anyone had a bad experience doing this? My fear is that some nut would figure out this 76 year old women lives alone in a relatively secluded area and rob her or worse.
Mind you though she has a shotgun in the kitchen and bedroom
She live 75 miles from me so the distance is a tad bit of a problem.
