Hi I am currently living in Sayre, Oklahoma and my husband walked through the door tonight with a surprise. A baby chick he bought from tractor supply. Lol its adorable so to answer one of your questions, actually two, I have one chick and breed unknown.
I have two dogs ( Roscoe P. Coltrane and Khalessi Rae), one grumpy cat (Salem and yes he's black lol) and two parrots, blanket term actually I have a temperamental double yellow headed Amazon named Querdo (weddo) and a very spoilt Umbrella Cockatoo Snow. Snow is very put out due to having a new sibling. She hates all her siblings so it's ok.
I used the heating pad idea and it seems to be ok with it. Thinking of naming my chickens after islands because of the unknown sex thing. So Capri is all snuggled in a shoe box covered in the heating pad with a thick baby blanket wrapped around that in a smaller parrot cage. I am worried its going to be lonely so will be picking up another one tomorrow. Jamaica ( the new unbought chick) and Capri will be quite spoilt rotten.
Since I don't have a coop yet we will be building it this fall but they probably won't be in it much until next spring. I figure during the day let them run around in it but at night I have a huge dog cage they can stay in on the enclosed back porch since they will be way to big by then for the parrot cage.
I work as a waitress, part time, at a Mexican restaurant. Only part time because I cannot leave all these critters alone for two long lol. The birds would probably feed all my food to the dogs and the cat. So that's me. I live in town so not a lot of area for a hobby farm. I wished but not going to happen.

Thank you for the wonderful welcome! I have gotten a baby bantam today so Capri is not alone and excited as can be. I didn't name the new one Jamaica, didn't seem to fit so its named Bishop, after the Bishop Stone island. Yes Capri is able to get away from the heating pad and today its eaten and drank a little. Tomorrow I purchase, what my husband's boss (backyard egg enthusiast) calls a starter coop. That way I can have time to build them a proper one or not. He's already informed what works here and a lot that doesn't so they will probably be set near the back of our house as close as can be due to windstorm and such.
This is a picture of the inside of the cage. I will be adding one more full sized and one more bantam to the mix. I think for starting out that should be enough. I did want a duck too but the boss said wait til later since it will need its own pen not to stress out the chickens. Thank you guys I have been reading so much and soon they will be move into a large dog pen wrapped in chicken wire and placed on our enclosed back porch until they feather out and able to go into their new home. Doing that so they have even more room to get away from the heating pad if they want to.
Capri was so quiet I was worried. My mom had chickens when I was a kid. I had three white leghorn rooster as pets, used a little box and slept with me Lol. I used to walk them on leashes like dogs and one rex rabbit who also walked around with us sometimes. Mostly the roosters would walk to the park and around it with my and I carried Rex. Anyway so I have some knowledge its just been a while and y'all have been a great help. Thank you again.
