CRD no more 4-h

All my chickens are hatchery chickens (except my rooster,) never vaccinated and never had a CRD. I maintain a closed flock.

now what am i to do with this beautiful flock that we all love. they are such cool pets, all have names and personalitys. i cant see killing all of them when i can make them better with meds. i know they would be carriers but i guess they wont leave my yard.

Im calling Purdue universitys poultry dept. again today and will talk to them more about what i should do. thanks everyone for your advice. looks like it will be the horses next year in 4-h till i get this humanely resolved. Wish me luck. I really hope to raise awareness on this topic since Indianapolis is fastly becomeing very populated with backyard poultry. Even giving Tour De Coop events and swaps.

The 4-h lady is always at the feed store. She even offered to buy me chicks from there. She goes to swaps and shows and meets all the time. I mean it may be impossible to stop the spread of crd. I am keeping a closed flock but if this is not fatal why should you cull?

If you are willing to accept the extra work and the restrictions, you can. But the main reason I would start over after an infestation is that you can easily infect other flocks. You maintain a source of possible infection for everyone else that has chickens in your area. Even with your best intentions, accidents do happen. How would you feel if you infected someone else's flock?
