This is 8 week old cream legbar. I had always thought it was a boy however someone on the legbar thread said its a girl. Can I ask for opinions, and please can you give reasons. I'm not doubting anyone (you probably all have way more experience than me) but I would like pointers for what to look for myself next time.
Thanks

that's a pullet

Cream Legbars are Autosexing

cockerels and pullets look different

although yours is a non standard Cream Legbar

but still very distinguishable as a cream Legbar pullet

If mines not a very good example that would explain why I couldn't tell gender at fluffy chick stage. There are plenty of web sites explaining the differences at 1 - 3 days old but what differences do you look for now? You say its easily distinguishable but how? Only having the one I have nothing to compare it to. At this age would you expect the cockerel colouring to be much different?

the pullets have a dark chipmunk stripe in the down that is very well defined

the cockerels have a washed out yellow down where the stripe is very light and not very defined and also a white head spot

as they grow they look different

the pullets get the salmon breast, grey barred hackles and brown base colour

the cockerels are barred all over with a darker bared tail sickles with a few white feathers in sickles acceptable

chestnut is not accepted in the birds and your pullet is showing chestnut in the hackles

Thank you habibs hens. To be honest I'm not worried that its not a good example, as long as it lays coloured eggs. I am so bored of boring light brown eggs - that's why I hatched this one, the welsummers and some marans. Looking for leghorns next!

Just thought I would add an update. My mystery chicken is now 16 weeks. Still no sign of crowing or eggs!!! It is a bit wimpy though, always last out of the coop I the morning, has curly toes, waddles like a duck and flies really badly!! But we still love it :)

that sure doesn't look like a pullet to me - that looks like a roo. I'm not an expert, but those orange wing feathers and hackles look very boy-like to me.

Haha, yeah that's a roo. He was very stealthy about it too. I would NOT recommend breeding him since he's so confusing, and the whole point of Legbars is that they are easy to gender ID.
